I think that the x3 is the best allrounder. Although the ride is too firm, but that will change when fitted with normal rubber. The m-sport models look a bit strange, but the xline trim is better looking, especially in black and tan with 19inch wheels; . Reliability info is quite suprising, since we have had one for nearly two years now, done about 50k kms. And it hasn't skipped a beat. We used to have a glk 250 cdi and my god how small, noisy(engine) and old fashioned(gearbox, steering) it felt after the x3 testdrive. I do hope that Merc has done something about it, and also the fact that rear sill got really dirty and it was impossible to get inside without dirty pants.

Mat I usualy see your reviews as holy but the bmw x3 is a lemon and I dont agree with this particular review. I bought a brand new x3 2016 and had the brakes changed after 10000km. My run flat tyres never lasted more than 18000km. Gearbox would shift passed 6 gear, corrosion under the hood when it was delivered. etc. Dumped it after 2 years with 38000km as I didn't want to change the tyres again. Bought a Peugeot 5008 GT Line and never looked back. Bmw had terrible service and the car was a lemon. Never again. Peugeot gives way more value for money. Bought a peug 2008 also. Amazing. So happy now.

Hey Mat, I've been watching your reviews for a long time now and have been indecisive about going for a sedan or a SUV as fitting 3 people comfortably in the 2nd row is one of the points in my checklist.
I have noticed that Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Merc C-class or for that matter not even the A6, 5 series fit 3 people comfortably, the SUVs like evoque, x3 don't either. Which vehicle does then! Looks like we'll end up with a sedan and a SUV
And would you review the Jaguar F-Pace and 2017 X5 soon?

I have seen you being biased towards merc for some reason. I drove GLC and X3. IMO, X3 is more practical, premium and surprisingly less tacky. Discovery and Q5 are bulky, with auto transmission lags, more towards SUV than crossover. While GLC is better, it is at least USD 10 grand more than BMW (mainly because of no default maintenance. You would always find black X3 with MSport dull.
Try Black with XLine or White MSport - with lighting package.

Cheers Mat.
One issue I find with the ever-changing infotainment systems these days (mainly the big 3 Germans) is their range is so large that there's always a crossover point between old and new. Meaning some models have the latest dash and screen etc, yet some are still on previous gen. The X3 highlighting this perfectly compared to the the 3, 4, 6 series etc.

Why do you have issues for load covers, people are either using the load space or not, in all my cars they get taken out and not put back in until it's sold, I think people don't know what an SUV is, is about getting your mountain bikes, surfboards, skis to the sea or mountains

Don-t know about anyone else who may have the x3 20d but I totally disagree with mat on the auto box. I have been driving my father in laws q5 recently 2018 model and I have to say it is so much better and responsive then my x3 so slow at times and confused.

Lol you can't compare anything to Mercedes Mat nowadays, ever since that new S class came out in 2014 everything out of the Mercedes design house has been simply breathtaking. They had a mercainaissance!
