Went to several bmw dealerships trying to compare best prices. The X5 is a bit out of my price range so I was looking at the X1, X2, and the X3. Right off the bat, when you see an X1 and X2 side by side, the X2 looks significantly smaller. My first car was a 2014 mazda 3 hatchback and I have to say, it didn't look too far off from it. The height of the X2 just looks and feels too low for my liking, it looks more like a hatchback than a crossover. Whereas the X1 looks more like an SUV than a crossover. Sitting in the backseat of the X1 and X2 was a night and day difference and is pretty much what sold me. Then I compared the X1 and the X3 together. The X3 is slightly taller but not by much, I'd say less than an inch if that, but what really distinguishes the 2 cars is the extra 10- of length on the X3 than the X1. When looking at them side by side, the X1 looks shorter and stubbier. But this is where the catch comes. just as I was about to sign the papers on the X3, I got in both back-seats one last time. I noticed that the X1 and the X3 felt almost identically spacious on the inside and especially in the back seat. The dealer confirmed with me that the cabin space in the X1 is just about the same as the X3, and actually ironically the X1 has slightly better legroom in the backseat than the X3, the X3 has such a slight amount of more room in the trunk that I hardly noticed, but I did notice 100% that my legs felt a bit more free in the X1.
The dealer told me the biggest differences between the X1 and X3 are the vast amount of options you can load the X3 with as opposed to the X1, as well as the 3 different engines you can choose from whereas the X1 only has the 28i as an option. He told me that if I was planning to get the base engine X3 (which I was) it wouldn't be far off from getting the X1. I wasn't looking for anything fast (I'm coming from a 340i) I just wanted something practical and fuel efficient. This car checked off all the boxes.
There's a few things I definitely wish the X1 had, like blind spot detection, ventilated seats, and the Harman Kardon surround sound system (X1 only has standard Harman Audio as an extra for $1000) - so that being said there's definitely a few things I'm going to miss with my 340i like the speed and the ear piercing audio, even the dakota leather seats. But sadly my 340i is now out of warranty, and after seeing the check engine light pop up a few times, I'm not ready to cough up thousands of dollars in services, and would rather start fresh again with the 4 year warranty for my peace of mind.
Overall the X1 is a fantastic car for people who are looking for a small (but spacious) SUV that can fit all of your belongings, and take you on adventures at ease without breaking your wallet on gas.

I own a 2019 MAZDA CX 5 GT Reserve (2. 5 L. turbo, AWD) for US $36, 000. (price paid. I prefer the CX 5 styling, interior luxury appointments, the 1. 5 L. turbo power (0 - 60 = 6. 2 sec)and the excellent handling and steering feel. And though my GT Reserve model is second from the top Signature model it has 95% of the Signature's amenities (cooled and heated seats, steering wheel, mirrors, etc, Apple & Android play, full leather seating and door/console trim, auto folding mirrors, full safety sensor array, etc)
PLUS Consumer Reports magazine rates my CX 5 above the BMW in reliability. No surprise there.
So you decide, BMW cachet or MAZDA CX 5 reliability, quality, styling, and amenities? (and for a lot less money.

Just had one of these as a courtesy car and couldn't BELIEVE how incredibly harsh and fidgety the ride was on the m-sport chassis and also the horrendous noise from the 225/40 R18 Goodyear tyres! (It felt too stiffly sprung and under-damped for good measures.
So glad you mentioned exactly these two issues - thought I was either going mad or being too unfair on an otherwise lovely car!

i dont even see even one reviewer saying that bmw does not even offer a basic blind spot monitor as option in X2 or entire 2 series. such a cheap and disgusting omission and attitiude. i can understand 2 series coupe is a basic drivers but for a cross over like x2 where u cant even pay more and get it as an option in 2019 is disgusting.

That's one ugly car. I think they actually look worse in the flesh. BMW's designers don't seem to be able to create properly matching proportions across the car. It's like 3 different people designed different parts of the bodywork and then just bolted it all together.
Anyway, it's just another jacked up hatchback crossover thing. Meh.

Surprised an auto journalist fails to recognize the significance of the side emblem in a BMW. To anyone interested, just Google the 1973 Bmw 3. 0 Csl and you will see this tradition goes back a long way. Granted, back then C pillars were not so large.

The things he complains about like high window sill and high boot lip are all for passenger safety. How can reviewers ignore basic simple facts like this? Safety is more important than a child seeing out the window.

I drove x2 28i for couple days, I think it was very comfortable with 19 inch wheels. I don-t know why mat Donetsk like the suspension. It handles very very well. If I only had this kind of budget, I will buy this car.

I like the look but the X1 drives better and roomier in my opinion. It felt like the ceiling was on top of my head and I-m 5-5-. The head up display gave me a migraine. I still should-ve gotten the X2 -
