Huge Golf-fan, but the BMW sure is tempting. However: FWD in a BMW? Not so sure about that. I loved the old 1-series for its RWD. which really made a difference and differentiated it from all the other hatchbacks in the segment. Another point against the BMW (for me) is the lack of a manual option. No matter how quick they shift, I just don't get automatics in sporty cars. Doesn't matter if it's a Golf GTI or a Porsche 911. Maybe it's just me being stubborn, but with cars feeling more and more disconnected from the task of driving, I don't need another system that adds to that feeling of disconnect.

Like watching your vids, but I-ve got no idea why you bang on about soft limiters so much. Must have seen 20+ vids with you moaning about them being fitted to cars. I wouldn-t want to rev a car right up when it-s stationary, what-s the point? I-ve heard you say it-s about impressing your mates, but I wouldn-t dream of getting them round to listen to my engine, I-d be embarrassed to find something so pointless cool. Maybe you-ll get used to them at some point soon, I do hope so.

So glad I drive a 7. 5 VW Golf GTi, having to set billions aside for their emissions scandal payouts have hit the trim, finish, detail and overall feel of these -new- VW-s.
And their most senior management sidestepped the entire issue by pretending it was all without their knowledge.
If you believe VW management weren-t aware you probably believe OJ was innocent and Prince Andrew isn-t a predatory paedophile.

Wet Metallic Brakes - great advice from Mat. Lots of sporty cars have metal pedals and they are lethal in the wet. I've had many a slip in the past. Drying your shoes before you drive is a great Top Gear Top Tip from Mat. Or perhaps I should say a Car Wow How. er. I can't think of a punchy term here. Anyway, I dry my shoes if its been raining and before I drive my metal shod Alfa.

Very interesting as a VW girl and someone who likes to hate on BMW I can-t argue with a single point. The only thing is; I have been with someone pushing a TI to its limits and it doesn-t seem to like it very much over a longer period of time. Hats off to BMW for creating a great drivers car, VERY cool that VW went back to offering manuals!

That brake pedal issue is no joke. Huge oversight by VW. The 128ti has been consistently hyped by the motoring press, and the motoring press has always had a soft spot for the GTI, so the Beemer must be pretty good. I-d get one for the wife in black but really it would be for me when I don-t need my larger touring.

Matt, you have not done your homework -
Currently 128ti comes with the Pro package as standard, means digital cockpit and larger screen. Also with regards to the boot, the floor is not removable, but you can fold it away, so technically works the same as having a removable floor.

Matt, could you do a video for used cars? Like if were buying used vehicles? Like a video reviewing all everyday suvs, or all everyday estates and things like budget used cars Like skoda, hyundai, seat, etc etc? I'll leave the specifics for you to chose but just an idea.

Nice car the 128ti. Will stick with my F20 for the moment but quite tempted.
Not sure the VW has gone forward in this generation. My girlfriend had a Mk7 2. 0TDI for some years. Decent car, though not comfortable or fun to drive in any way.

I won't buy a BMW again. 3-4 failures within 50k km. Rotten air conditioning radiator. Fuel injector to be replaced. Main computer to be replaced. And possibly beginning of failure of valvetronic now. Now I think it's a piece of junk.
