Is a basic Porsche 911 better than a BMW M3?

It-s time for two of the best RWD cars you can buy to go head-to-head on track! That-s right, Mat-s brought his BMW M3 along to go up against an entry-level Porsche 911 Carrera to see which is the true track king! So how do they compare? Starting with the BMW, it-s powered by a 3-litre straight-six twin-turbo that can put down 510hp & 650Nm of torque. It-s the heaviest car here, though, tipping the scales at 1730kg. Then we have the entry-level 911. Under the bonnet, you-ll find a 3-litre flat-six twin-turbo that can put down 385hp & 450Nm. So it-s way down on power compared to the BMW, but it-s got one big advantage - it-s 225kg lighter! So what do you think - will the more powerful M3 snatch it? Or will it be a walkover for the 911?

Okay - time for you to run the comparison that the world of car nuts need to see! Do these same track and drag comparison to the super expensive 992 GT3 and it-s laughed at sibling - the base Carrera 992. The GT3 is $300, 000 with typical $100, 000 ADM these days - and the Carrera base 911 is essentially less than half that cost. one could just about buy three base 91/-s or one GT3-s. The GT3 gives you an extra 115 hp in an advertised -real- race car engine and some -real- race car suspension. The interiors, seats, electronics, steering wheel and so on are identical- oh wait! You do get a badge that has three Characters and the base carrera a whole bunch of characters.
So is Porsche scamming every buyer of the GT3? Are they simply with hood marketing putting an extra $200, 000 in the pocket of themselves and their dealers? I think so is my guess. But we need to test this and carwow is the honest source for a face off. That GT3 had better smoke the base 911 in both track and also in acceleration for God-s sense right? What do you really get for $200, 000 extra dollars? Does that engine with 115 more hp and the fancy sounding wishbone racing fancy sounding suspension really cost Porsche hundred of thousands of dollars more to produce the GT3? You do get some extra scoops and oh yeah the big kind of silly wing - a wing that they say is vastly superior and gives fantastic downforce all of which is suppose to make the car really much much faster than that scoop less and wingless poor man-s base 911. porsche salesman tell me that the base 911 is for guys that just can-t afford the -real- 911-s which start with the 911 S. The base 911 is a -girl-s- car because a gal can-t really control the -power- in all the other 911 models up in hp than the base car.
So carwow- do this comparison already. Find out for us if we need to spend $200, 000 more to get the GT3 to get a car that is fast and is a real race car. My guess is that the GT3 is a few tenths of a second faster 0-60 and a a couple seconds faster than the base around your track. these models with all the goofy names- S, 4s, GTS, GT3, GT3-RS and even Turbo and turbo s are all created to separate car nuts like me from our money really fast. They don-t even give you a jazzier interior - or fancier leather. That might actually cut into their profit margin. Let-s see the mother of all Porsche competition. The M3 and base 911 comparison is really useless as most two door Porsche sports car buyers would not even consider this Dad-s sedan with car seats inside. Why compare them? But Porsche makes every car guy who buys a base 911 feel inadequate and even embarrassed to drive a base 911 into the dealership for warranty work. How many times have I heard a base 911 guy answer when asked what type of 911 do you own say- only the base 911. Let-s find out if every Base 911 buyer should wish they could have afforded a new 992 top of the track cars - the 911 carrera--.

The Porsche 911 has more -panache- and gets more attention. BMW's are everywhere. Porsche's also hold their value really well and are rock sold. My wife's 2018 BMW has been in the shop numerous times for lots of problems. My 2016 Porsche 911 has only been in for standard maintenance.

Taken the real world into consideration. i hav to take BOTH cars.
I lov the 911. The way it drives n how it looks. But in the real world, a double date is so much fun. I just cannot ask the other couple to get in the back of a 911.

Im not sure thats a good comparison since theyre build for very different things. The 911 is for middle aged men who want their youth back while the M3 is for 20 something year olds who need it to compensate for their shortcomings.

Its not a fair comparison imo, that BMW carries more weight than the 911 with 4 doors and 4 seats. If Mat wants to compare it should be between an M4 Coupe or M3 coupe, not a four door. -

One is a purpose built sports car while the other is a super powered family car - the power doesn-t hide the shortfalls in using what was never designed from the out set as a sports car
reply

Not quite a fair comparison since the M3 is his daily driver and it takes a bit of practice to get the best out of the Porsche. However clearly the M3 makes a better daily.

If you owned the 911 it would put a smile on your face as you looked back at it. If you owned the BMW you could never look back at that grill without getting nauseous.

For one reason always the P resale value. I have a 2013 991. 1 Carrera S the price is going up not down. An M3 will half its value in 4 years end of story.

Don-t understand why the m3 combo wasn-t quicker. That 0-60 is not much quicker than my 2010 stock v8 M3. Surely 2 more doors doesn-t add that much weight?
