Question, my idler pully is showing some rubber residue from the new belt, is this normal or do i have it too tight, i have a 1998 ranger 3. 0. I didnt tighten too hard as im not that strong anyway. No squeak and the job went really easy for radiator, thermostat, belt and idler THANK YOU CHRIS FIX!
i have still a power steering noise and noises like powersteering sound. when accelerating. but everything seems fine, belts not hot, water flowing etc. I did drain out the ps reservoir with a pump, still need to do a few more times, thx again for the tips n tricks there too. its just that odd rubber on the idler, lettering looks new on belt. and i kept my old belt just in case lol

the idler pully's have a 0. 50 sealed bearing and can be replaced by your own self & the serpentine belt your own self. sealed bearings are just as bad because they are only engineered to last a short time & the auto industry uses these POS bearings because they make a mountain of cash for the parts stores. the sealed bearings are ok if used in non heated applications. most all front wheel drive vehicles & 4wd vehicles use these TRASH BEARINGS that also are junk. i've replaced many many of these and the sealed bearings were all at fault.

There's a video where a guy turns a long screwdriver into a stethoscope/megaphone by attaching a half gallon jug cut in half to the handle of the screwdriver and by placing the screw head against a bearing the jug amplifies the bearing noise so you can tell which pulley is the problem one. Really cool trick if you don't have a proper shop stethoscope.

This video is so awesome! I was able to replace the pulley just like in the video. I'm in awe that I was able to do this job by myself. Even after I fixed it, I'm driving around in disbelief that I fixed it myself. And the best part? I marvel at the amount of money and time I saved by not going to the mechanic.

I know very little in mechanic but I was wondering how do you know when you've put the right amount of torq on the bolt when you use a simple ratchet? Thanks for taking the time to show us the steps, I appreciate it (y! All the best on your projects

Do I have to replace the tensioner and idle pulleys if my new belt keeps slipping off alignment and hangs off a little bit off of the power steering pump pulley
Both idle pulleys and alternator pulley?

It's crazy, atleast yours still spun. mine was completely seized and the belt broke. I driver a 03 Ford Ranger with the 4. 0, good running work truck never gave me major issues

Thanks for the info. I'm gonna go try it since I'm a lady with no reliable men folk in my area. I guess I'll give it a try. I did get a ride for parts from one and a set of tools.
