Buick is by no means a car company that is associated with cool cars, they really do not have any models that appeal to the speed junkies or young kids. However, back in the 80s Buick was racin in NASCAR, and after finding success in the racing world, Buick decided to build a fast car for normies. In 1987 Buick gave us the Grand National The Buick Grand National was a Buick Regal named after the Regals success at the NASCAR Grand National. This new special edition of the Regal came in one color only, black. It was also much faster, rivaled the Chevrolet Corvette, and had sweet Grand National badges. But just how exactly did Buick make the Grand National special? And why did it become the dream car for Abel Ibarra? Abel has built and driven some of the fastest rotary-powered vehicles ever, so why is his dream car a Buick Grand National? Just watch the vid Huge

One name in the turbo Buick world BUDDY INGERSOLL First turbo Buick running 7. 16 at over 200 MPH in the 1/4 mile 3. 8 stroked to 4. 1 twin turboed was faster than 11. 5 liters NA V8 in the same class. Yes It took the Nissan Skyline 31 years to beat these numbers with their 3. 8 V6 stroked to 4. 1 and twin turboed. I'll let you do the math to figure out how much HP it needed to make to post those numbers in the 1/4 mile. (there are no offical numbers, but here is a hint the crank was built to with stand 2, 000 hp)

I'll never forget the day I learned about a grand national. It was 2004, I was in my 88 5. 0 mustang. It was pretty hopped up. I pulled up behind a black Buick with the 3rd brake light cover that said u'd lose. I said bs. I nailed it. He let me get a biiiiiig lead. Then I heard turbo. then I quickly saw that brake light again. A year later. We were sitting next to each other in driving school to get points off our license lol 800hp that car made. And I will never forget my first run in with a GN

Showed this video to my dad just now. He's got two Grand Nationals. He pointed out some misinformation. The transmission is a 4 speed, the engine block that was pictured was not the stage one block. I believe he said it was a t2 block. (It's a cast block) Also. The rear emblem on the left has been replaced. It's way too far to the right

Chevy had a corvair turbo in the 60s, Pontiac had a turbo Trans Am in the 70s, Ford had a Turbo Mustang in the mid 80s how is this one of the few Turbo cars? Porsche had turbos, Volvo had turbos, GMC had Cyclone turbo trucks. Do you know what you're talking about?

Being from the UK I'm not so into most of your cars I love the looks and sounds but not the handling I like fast cars that can actually go around corners BUT I love this car only problem for me is the auto I know its correct but you just need a clutch and a gear stick baby

Isnt that stock power number extremely disappointing though? Im pretty sure late 60s early 70s cars could make close to 400, even past that, and easily more with little modification. It would be kinda sad to get gapped by a high school kid in his used mustang.

I wish Grand Nationals were made more. I reckon if car makers now revived old school models into now. Like imagine if the they made Retro Revival Rx-7 skyline, supra, and so many others today. They would sell better that modern models.

I'm proud of all you that noticed the rx7. Now stop making FD's worth 50k cause. Trust fund I guess? jk but really Oh and please, please, no more FD ls swaps, that's heresy and you need to take dental floss to your badge cause it's no RX now

Thats funny. The turbo regals got me into performance cars back in my teens. Always wanted a grand national(1987 GN of course. But my focus st will do. But, My focus st don't have that GN on full boost sound that I always love to hear.

dont hate me for this, the GN motor is great, but, i realllyyy think it should have a a v8 option, i understand cars manufacturers wanted their cars to be more officiant fuel wise, but it looks like it needs a v8
