Is Upgrading Your Engine Mounts Even Worth It?

Do aftermarket engine mounts even do anything? Who knows? Today on Money Pit, Zach installs a fancy set of polyurethane engine mounts on the miata as he explores the pros and cons of different types of engine mounts. Gummy: I got into PC hardware because I was terrified of cars and the amount of learning behind understanding how they work. I had no idea where to gain said knowledge. I ve watched Donut Media for three days and the only thing I regret is not finding it earlier.

I used to work for a company that designed and produced mounts and bushings for various GM and Ford models. I think it's important to note that unless your car is more than 5 years old (or if the material has completely failed) changing out the stock mounts is unnecessary. However, replacing them with more rigid materials not only creates additional NVH, but can negatively impact the longevity of your car overall as all those vibrations can lead to stress cracks and additional wear in other components, (such as drivetrain internals, electronic components and structural points. It doesn't really matter in race cars, since they only have to last a few weeks (if that. But your daily driver is really going to suffer if you choose a solid mount.

One of my favorite mods on my 94 cobra was solid motor mounts and poly trans mount. Havnt missed a shift since it's been done. Feels like it's putting way more power down. My main issue is I get a vibration on deceleration from high speeds that goes away after a second and I get a slight vibration just in general but considering i have a half stripped interior and a 5 liter v8 solid mounted to my chasis. There's not nearly as much vibration as I was warned about. But it is fun to rev the engine and make the whole car move like the yanko in the second fast and furious

Some time ago i changed my engine mounts. The car was vibrating A LOT after i tried a 0-100, somehow, 2 engine mounts broke in the process and the engine was doing contact with the chasis and the engine was supported by only 1 (imagine the face of the mechanic when we realised that. Bought the best mounts i could find to make it last as long as i can

This was fun to watch, all of Donut's content is awesome, actually some of the best out there with production and topic, in my opinion. Keep up the good work! Oh, I always see that apartment building in the videos, wanted to know what rent was like there. wish I would have never looked, crazy!

I noticed he's using Pittsburgh (Harbor Freight) jack stands. There was a recall just announced for a ton of these. While the blue ones in the video don't seem to be the recalled ones, if you own any HF jackstands, please look up the recall! Part numbers are 56371, 61196, 61197.

Hey Zach! It looks like you used a swivel adapter with your torque wrench. Did you compensate for the adapter? It's probably not too overtorqued if you didn't. .. 40ftlb isn't much, and it's probably a Class 10. 9 bolt (or higher, but engine mounts aren't something to mess around with!

I just recently did 75a engine/trans mounts in my '04 Jetta. It was a world of difference in driving. Much more connected and drive train delivery of power. Nvh is not desirable in comparison, but the benefits are awesome. Huge contrast. #blackforestind

Some stock engines can break mounts. Was plowing snow with my parents '92 Dodge diesel a few years back when the torque broke all of the engine and transmission mounts. At the same time. Then the engine jumped over and forward into the radiator. Not a fun time.
