Another head unit that you guys could look at for the Miata I just picked up the Sony XAV-AX5000 for 348 and a set of Kenwood KFC-1796PS speakers for 89 and it is very nice option as well if you're looking to spend a good bit for a head unit, the only downsides of the head unit i have had is the lack of a volume knob, it still has buttons though, but i was expecting that when i bought it, and it does not handle sunlight well, but he speakers i haven't had any downside to at all to them. I'm sure if you would buy an amp for the speaker they would be even better too

You know there is a 50 cheap unit (7013B) which also has Android Auto and Apple Carplay support and it also seems to work a bit faster than the cheap unit you chose.
I've put it on an old car + added a backup camera (which it also supports) and for the money it's a huge upgrade
though there are some annoying things like:
- Unit buttons next play, pause don't work in android auto/carplay
- Android auto needs some extra settings to make it connect right (carplay works fine out of the box)
- Charge speed through the usb is really bad

One feature that is often overlooked is auto dim or dim, or dim adjusted from the car controls. An overly bright head unit sucks when driving a dark road. Dim needs to be easy to adjust. And auto dim, or on a dim timer is essential. Some cars have the ability to have the vehicle controls control the screen brightness, but this can be dependent on the manufacturer and model, and year. I love have a seamless control that you don't have to think about. A timed dimmer might have to be adjusted 2 twice a year when the day light saving time happens.

I put a Pioneer MVH-X390BT into my 2000 Miata with the stock speakers and it sounds incredible. Honestly, I'm shocked the quality is so good on stock hardware with an aftermarket head unit. Nearly doubled my bass and with a ton of EQ controls it's easy to get that perfect balance, especially for such a small car. I swear by Pioneer with all my audio builds, as they're the best bump-for-buck.

DSP is prob the most important feature regarding sound quality for a head unit. Stock HUs in most cars in the past 10 years have build it DSP and EQs for the stock system, so when you put in an aftermarket system of any sort, you lose the tuning. So you need features to be able to tune the system once you go aftermarket. Missing that in this video was kinda lame.

Does your Miata still have the stock power amp? I didn't take mine out and the wiring kit I got ran the powered signal to it with a trim pot to bring it down to line level. Was tempted to take the power amp out, but was too lazy to take the dash out to get to it. Any opinions on running thru the stock power amp vs taking it out of the chain?

In my Subaru I've installed a high class 2-din unit from Kenwood and I'm really happy from it. Initialy I wanted Pioneer, but the Bluetooth feature was laging and also Android Auto in Bulgaria is not working. I've decided that Kenwood was the better option and the player came with huge discount.

its not about the money spent, it never is. it just so happens that money usually gets you quality and features. that amojnt of required money has dropped significantly in the last several years. Pioneer is still the way to go bang for your buck 100% and im less than 3 min into the video

Hey guys, check out the Atoto A6 on Amazon. I used it for my 09 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS, and it's about the same as the Pioneer units I looked at. Cost me abt 180 for the unit, and I love it! Had it for 1. 5 years. Not a big fan of Kenwood. Too expensive for what you get.
