Rivian R1T Off-Road: The Good and The Bad

I took the Rivian R1T off-roading! It's fast and exciting, but it's also very capable off-road - and I drove the Rivian off-road to show you what it's like. Here's my review of the Rivian R1T off the pavement doing some off-road trails. Digital: It appears to me that Rivian's engineers could work harder with sensing spin and moving power to the wheel that still has purchase. I was surprised that they let any individual wheel spin as much as it did. Much tuning left to do.
I thought about getting their SUV (not yet released, but it's clearly more than I need.

I have to really question the 4 wheel motor setup when it comes to situations like this. In this setup you can't ever have more power going to one wheel than what that motor can provide, where in other AWD/4WD vehicles, many of them can transfer 100% of the power to one wheel.
Now I do think this issue is offset a bit due to the amount of power each motor can provide, as many 4x4's have 250-350HP stock but most are much lighter than the Rivian as well. So if the Rivian has 2 tires touching the ground it can have 200 HP to each wheel, but if the truck weighs 50% more than the 250-350HP ICE 4x4, it is still under-powered compared to the traditional vehicle.

Disappointed to hear that low resolution cameras are in the launch/flagship product from a new car company in 2021 - especially at this price.
They obviously cut corners with the camera hardware and if it is going to have long term value for owners, they should be mindful of early obsolescence (especially if they plan to use the cameras for auto pilot - like Tesla.
For the rest of issues Doug mentioned, I am sure (since the hardware is there) an OTA update will refine/fix those. The physical camera is going to be a bigger problem in the long-run. I wonder where else compromises were made?

My R1T is set for delivery in March. The biggest concerns for me are the inability to go to a smaller wheel than a 20 (I want more rubber, no crawl ratio and will it be able to have aftermarket suspension dampening options. It would be nice if you could lock the drive tires instead of having the computer control the spin.

Remember, rivian gave two vehicles for a HUGE expedition from the tip of South America up to Los Angeles. If it can handle all of that crazy off roading, it can definitely make it up this hill. They took all of that data and experience from
The expedition and put it into their production vehicles

For those asking about range off-road, I didn't see a HUGE depletion of range when doing off-road stuff, though it did go quicker than on-road. I'd say range depleted maybe 30 percent faster off-road than on road. Interestingly I only lost a mile or two going up and down the rock hill.

the whole motors at the wheel is pretty dumb design all the big 3 have to do is put an electric motor on a regular drivetrain and it would do great. you would get increase millage by keeping the motor going at its optimal rpm

well except for the camera, basically all of Doug s conplaints can (and probably) will be fixed with an over the air SW update. like the diff lock. that s really easy to do I guess, just a few lines of code.

You didn't mention the biggest con: the battery range when off-roading. Based on how bad the Wrangler 4xe battery range is, I'd bet this thing gets less than 50 miles of off-road range.

I d like to think of this as a beautiful collaboration between Doug and Rivian to better product development. Living an off-roader s experience is key to produce a capable truck!
