The Mercedes-AMG CLA45 Should Be Better

SIGN UP FOR TURO The Mercedes-AMG CLA45 is a decent car -- but it has some flaws. Today I'm reviewing the CLA45 and I'm showing you all the ins and outs of the Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG. SurelyYewJest: Wow, scoring on this one confused me. I thought for sure features would be a 3 given what it's up against, the price, and what it doesn't have standard. I would have given quality a high 5. For acceleration, that measurement always seems to be treated against ALL cars you've ever reviewed, rather than against the entrants in the class. Whatever the case, this review has knocked my impression of this car down a good amount. I'm the kind of buyer that is very much in the options-maxed-out camp and to me the CLA45 might as well be the Mitsu Evo. I don't care if few options means weight saved; I want the features because while I may have the biggest engine, I'm not getting it to win stoplight drag races.

I have always wanted a Mercedes, so when it was time for a new car, I headed off to the Mercedes dealership. My model of choice was a C300. I took one for a test drive and; no keyless entry, no push button start, no backup camera, no right lane camera, tiny infotainment screen, no navigation, the seats were not leather, but plastic, no adaptive cruise control. Pretty disappointing. A Honda Accord has all that & much more. I drove them back to back & the Merc was just a little nicer, but not that I'd have noticed if I hadn't driven them one after the other. Oh, and the Honda was about 25, 000 cheaper. And Honda's reliability is far better. Not such a Mercedes fan anymore.

I have the CLA 45 orange art edition. It has the climatronic and this one also features the button with the van symbol. Maybe it has initially been developed for the B class? Also, I cannot confirm the problem with starting smoothly from a stop light. I find it quite easy make a smooth start. WIth regard to the ride quality, it's a sports car with a stiff suspension. If you want a smooth ride, get an E class. I do agree that a mercedes should not be sold with such a basic standard configuration of features as this car.

Hey Doug, this is not the 'latest' version 2016+, this is a pre-facelift 2014-2016 version, and most of the issues you described were addressed in 2016 with the facelift. There is also the 2020MY announced/released which is appallingly powerful I can totally understand the poor review based on the vehicle shown - it looks like a base model mainstream car inside. I believe it would be worthwhile finding a 2016+ version and doing a review or re-view of that - it might just change your mind.

Don't understand what's up with European cars and their reluctance to include a backup camera as a standard feature. It's mandated in the US but for rest of the world it's still a cost option. Almost every Japanese and Korean comes with it even in the cheapest trim. Also where I live in Asia, most luxury cars even the S class, don't come with sunroof as standard cos nobody wants them here. It's apparently more luxurious to have a solid roof and it's so hot here that no one uses it.

The plastic lower dash looks cheap (I covered with carbon fibre wrap to make it looks less plain. but the model your video is a pre MY16 model. MY16 fix the gearbox (more smooth than the it used to be even though still not excellent. There is another button near the gear shift for drive modes, then it also add one button for suspension setting and another for exhaust setting plus more importantly an extra 20+ horse power to I think 380.

Correction - Mercedes finally did add a couple of the features I complained about as standard for 2019, though not for 2018 (specifically heated seats, keyless go, and dual-zone climate control. It's still insane to me they weren't standard for 2016. Of course, these new features came with a price increase, and now the CLA45 starts around 54, 000, which is just barely behind an RS3 at 57, 000. Go get an RS3, people. Go get an RS3.

. and my 2009 E-class has all of those options and then some, feeling instantly more proud of it: -D In anything carrying an AMG badge, all of those things should be as standard, but to be fair when I've checked some of the used CLA45 AMG currently for sale here in Germany, vast majority of them did have sunroof, reverse camera, dual zone climate control etc. etc.

A lot of these complaints are just missing options. They didn't make them standard on this car so that they could bring the price tag down and attract more young buyers. Review a fully optioned CLA45 and you'd call it a different car. That doesn't seem like an honest review to me, although I do agree that this is the least optioned mercedes I've ever seen.

Was the owmer Asian? LolI know plenty of middle age Asians (mainly mainland Chinese) who buys base poverty spec BMWs/Mercs (318is, C180s)with no options ticked just so they can have the BM or Merc badge to show off to their peers of their perceived rich social status lolSounds just like the above except swap the BM/Merc bragging rights to AMG bragging rights lol
