Think of it as this: Turbo = Fuel Injection Hybrid = UnleadedStart stop = 16 Valves Lithium powered (concept of more power for same weight or space) = Twin Cam (More power for same displacement or economy)In 30 years all the above will be standard and their specialness will be looked over by another missing out on the impact it had. At the time the Sera had the engine, doors, unique body styling. but as looking at Doug's commentary the only thing that has withstood the test of time (that still stands out today) is only the Doors.

When i was little growing up i had a series of small travel books called the I Spy: Cars or whatever and in these books were all of the vehicles, cars, and such that you could check off as you spotted them. You would get a score based on the rarity of the car you saw 5 being for run of the mill Rovers and Vauxhalls and 50 points for the rarest Ferrari's or Lamborghini's. The Sera was in one of the books and commanded a full 50 point score. I was baffled by this because looking at the picture it just looked like a weird mini-van (that's what i thought it was until i saw this video, no joke) with butterfly doors. Not exactly the most exciting car in the world, but i never ever saw one so i guess the maker of the book had the score right. Anyway it's cool to finally see my younger selves white whale, thanks for doing the review.

Lol Toyota just made a mass market concept car. Butterfly doors, canopy roof, beats by dre soundbar, Toyota reliability. It really seems like a car from the future. Would love to see Toyota bring this back as an EV. Imagine a 4 door SERA with 4 butterfly doors, 2 normal and 2 suicide butterfly door. Very cool. Looks totally like something you would see in an anime. Cars need these types of quirks to be profitable, if not then who is pushing the industry forward. Think about it. A Toyota 2-door compact inspired a legendary supercar design. Normally it's the other way around. It just sucks that Toyota and other japanese car makers are going the way of the dodo. at least in terms of excitement.

I owned one of these when I was stationed in Okinawa in the early 2000s. I remember opening the doors at the used car dealership and it made me laugh. I remember paying around 500 for it, and I gave it away for free LOL you can buy it now for over 10, 000 that makes me laugh even more. Mine didn't have the CD player or the speaker in the back, but I did buy one of those tape adapters that you found in the center console. The sun shades overhead did help, but the whole thing was more of a child's easy bake oven on wheels, than a car.

The all-glass canopy is a little like my 2005 6-speed C230 Sport Coupe. It's really cool to have all glass all the way from the windshield to the hatch. However, my Coupe has a button to open the roof and/or slide a sin shade open, and of course quite conventional doors. Lots more power and way more fun to drive as well.

Toyota Sera was quite popular among JDM vehicle enthusiasts here in South Korea and it was easy to import since Japan is right next to us. It's so sad that most of them are junked and they're super rare now. That car is also hated by window tinting shops here because it's a pain in the neck to tint the door windows, lol

I shuddered to see the 90s NX. I had a 1988 Nissan Pulsar NX (SE for those extra few horsies and 5spd manual for the fun. I think it had the best styling of all the NX generations. The most fun econobox I ever owned. Ive yet to find one in good condition, its a shame.

I wonder how drivable this would be if you limo tinted the heck out of everything but the windshield and the side windows. Also, this made me miss my Mazda MX3 GS with its tiny 1. 6 V6. Also, also, the first thing I thought of with the side glass was the Subaru SVX.

Doug: this glass roof looks like a f 15 fighter jets Me: it kinda looks like the glass roof of the Jurassic Park SUV from the 1993 film just look at the glass roofs on the fords from Jurassic Park and then look back at the Toyota Sara review and you will see it.

Per Wikipedia, funky mode set by The SLSS came with a three mode Digital Sound Processor (DSP) which cycled through 'off', 'Casual' or 'Funky' mode by use of a button labelled WARP on the CD/Radio or CD/Radio/Cassette head unit, I see at at 8: 05 in the video
