Heres When Mercedes Made Good Cars, 1990 Mercedes S-Class Christian W: In my honest opinion, the newer and current batch of Mercedes blow the old ones away in every single category except perhaps simplicity. The newer Mercedes are better in every regard. Better built, faster, safer, more fuel efficient, better handling, more comfortable and so on. Reliability? What is reliability? More electronic features could mean some issues, but as long as the car starts, drives and does this over and over again I could care less. Also keep in mind that car companies are only building cars that people want; and todays customers want cars that have advanced technology onboard. Keep in mind that even older Mercedes had a reputation of being complex cars back in their time. The main difference is that today we know the weaknesses of the old Mercedes cars and we know to cheaply and effectively fix/maintain them. Also, people today dont keep their cars as long, which means less incentive to maintain them correctly. Theres also a generational difference. In the old days one could argue that many car owners knew how to repair and maintain their cars, while today this knowledge has disappeared, no doubt brought about by the increased complexity in modern automobiles. Due to the nature of my work I regularly get to drive many older cars, including some old Mercedes. They are nice, but I would rather own a newer, modern Mercedes. In fact I do, and I wouldnt want to daily drive an old Mercedes with their soft, cushy suspensions and lifeless steering and noisy engines. At the end of November I picked up my new 2018 Mercedes A250 AMG Line W177 A-Class, a technological tour de force (MBUX etc. Loving itAlso, if Mercedes makes horrible cars then nobody would buy them. Brand prestige and image can only go so far. For every one person who has a lemon Mercedes or problems with it there are literally nine others who have a great ownership experience. And this is reflected in their global sales. One more thing: reliability. Ask ten people about what is reliability and you will get ten different answers. For me a car is reliable if it starts, drives, brakes and shuts down and I can do this over and over again. If a feature has an issue or fails, but this does not affect the way the car drives, then thats an annoyance, but not a reliability issue - at least to me.

I had a 1989 560SEL (5. 6 liter V8 gas engine) it was the same body as the car in this video but a lot faster. it was luxury at its finest. even the back seats were heated and electrically reclining. the one I had was well cared for before I owned it and was pristine inside and out. sadly, as I was sitting at a red light a car length behind a pickup truck, some dumb cunt texting and driving ran into the back of me at about 60 mph without ever touching her brakes. the rear license plate was pushed up to the back window and my car was then pushed a car length into the pickup truck crushing the front of the car. the entire passenger compartment was left completely intact leaving me with only minor back and neck pain which was mostly cleared up with a couple months of physical therapy. I drew two conclusions from this experience. 1) dont text and drive2) a big 80s/90s Mercedes Benz S-Class sedan is an excellent car to survive a massive accident in.

Simply the best mercedes s class ever built. Its modern enough but old school enough as well. The few electronics on the cars are very necessary and the mechanicalness of these are amazing. I own several w126 cars and my 300 SEL gas inline 6 is a underrated beast. Very torquey and linear power. And 273000 miles it still has the machine marking in the cylinder walls from factory I also owed a 560 s class coupe and it saved my life in a country road accident. Robust and tough as hell. Im actually hoping to buying a 560 SEL tommorow morning. The ultimate in the w126 s class line up. Big, powerfulll 5. 6 v8 and has dual airbag, auto climate control, power heated front and REAR seats, power steering coulum with memory, power headrests, 2 way memory seats, lsd rear end, hydraulic suspension, power sunshade, foot rests, sunroof, great sterio, and pneumatic lumbar seats. For 1989 its the pinnacle and wont be matched.

I dont [personally know anything about old gasser mercedes. But working on quite a bit of old mercedes 5 cylinder diesels. They do sound strange and they are SUPER gutless (which you will never understand how gutless until you drive one) until they hit turbo boost then they have normal vehicle acceleration. Im talking youre going 2 MPH for at least 10 seconds from a stop sign then it hits turbo and then you get a slight more acceleration, and you better give yourself a mile before pulling out in front of someone. Other than that they are pretty strong running for a long time. You will have your luxury issues, but if you dont care about all the luxury things functioning properly, the engine and tranny will run a long time.

You tell someone that their new Benz is not as good as the old ones. You tell them that they make them cheeper and cheeper every year. When you pull the wheels off and you are looking at Toyota Tacoma brake design or worse Impala brakes. Then you tell them Mercedes has the lowest customer satisfaction of any vehicle made today and the Toyota Yaris has the highest. Then you tell them they just paid 120, 000 for a 40, 000 worth of automotive performance. Then you tell them they just bought a name. Then you can stand their and watch a grown man cry, have a temper tantrum and a melt down. People that drive German cars think they are soooo special. Then I laugh and laugh and laugh some more.

I remember back in 2013 asking you about these cars, when you made the video about modern Mercedes Benzs being money pits. You did not respond, but this video tells me you and I are basically on the same page when it comes to the W126 Mercedes Benz. I currently own a 1991 560 SEL, which I bought with 27000 miles for over 30k looking brand new, and still does. I know that was a lot of money, but they are my absolute favorite cars of all time, especially these American Versions with those big bumpers. I am currently purchasing a 1990 version with just under 20, 000 miles I really love to see these cars being valued and appreciated for the engineering masterpieces they are.

this is so true years ago(late 80s) we went to Greece on Holiday and all the taxi drivers drove were Mercedes diesels. We found a driver that spoke good English and he explained that they were so solid that they were just getting broken in at 200k made complete sense. When I worked in the car business, this could no longerbe said about Mercedes most of the owners I spoke with couldnt wait to get rid of their cars expensive oil changes and quirky problems that even the dealers often couldnt fix I worked on a Toyota lot for 5 plus years and most of these owners were trying to get into a Toyota withlow cost of ownership.

My uncle and aunt had one before. One of their kids and uncle both agree getting rid of it somewhere along the line was a dumb decision. They just got a Nissan leaf used and can barely get around on a charge. Since Ive talked about importing older cars to sell, my uncle thinks of getting into it now as well since good cars are turning 30 years old now and can easily be registered without having to pay a huge fee due to the age. Id like to see him actually get into it as well and perhaps buy a mercedes like this that they had before.

I know that a Mercedes S-Class with a straight 6 cylinder petrol engine in a good shape from 1990 can fetch up to 20K in some markets, I know about Iraq, some people love them so much and say they are the best cars made ever and probably because they wanted to feel power, that time in Iraq only Saddam and high ranking government officials could actually drive them, everyone else was driving a Toyota Corolla, Crown or Corona or a terrible Brazilian made VW Passat or some old Datsun from 1979 or 1980 or a Soviet made junk Lada.

Not only Mercedes but lots of 90s vehicles were at the pinnacle of automotive reliability. Dont believe me? 90s Corollas, Civics, Lancers are still tickin. The 90s were the truly the best decade for automotive engineering reliability. Around early 00s cars started getting more and more complicated and nowadays its downright obscene the amount of recalls with vehicles with just a couple of years on them.
