Worked with a few Kiwis in London back in the 80's. Went there in 1987 & spent 4 months+ based in New Plymouth. My Kiwi friends looked after me & the wife & gave us brother Mick's old VW converted rusty sliding door van which we lived in for most of the time. I found DB Brown difficult to drink, but after 6 small glasses I didn't seem to bothered. Love your video because one day we drove from Auckland to N P on the 'Metal' back roads. Went round a blind sharp bend & an articulated sheep truck with trailer came round the other way & thankfully he kept to the left otherwise I wouldn't be here. I have happy memories of NZ. P. S. The day we arrived at Auckland was the same day as the Pope. Our plane was with the ALL BLACKS on board, They had a bad year but the still had to queue like us at passport control.

Tim, though I have seen some other of your YT videos of the golf rail carts and also snippets of the Shotover Jet boat, I thought your edit here; juxtaposing the view from the rail journey with glimpses of bridges, tunnels (even an abandoned yellow Mini carbody shell) where the road and rail carts pass through the same valleys, was brilliant. I still reckon NZ, The Lost World or that part of the North Island, will be wonderful when it is 'finished' - very much a construction project underway.

Interesting. I may be wrong but I thought I spotted fossilised clumps of blue-green algae(cyanobacteria) called stromatolites. 440px-Stromatolites_in_Sharkbay. jpg
I liked the beach-find art fish a lot. :) A recent travel program has attracted me a lot to a NZ rail trip. But let's face it I would settle for 7 mile rail trip into Glasgow just now if it was safe! (back to toddler-sitting - I hope to check out more of this after 6)

Well, Tim, seeing a little over 2-thirds of this video thus far, I'd describe some of the roads you've traversed as like -dogs' barks-, very -ruff- while other roads, particularly at the one-hour mark as being -Mercedes- roads for all the -Benz- that are in them! LOL But the railcart segments had me thinking how they'd spin those carts around at the end of their trip to go back to their starting point.

I have to confess; I never spent much time in New Plymouth & Taranaki and never once went down this road. Some of the countryside is really beautiful.
Seems a shame that no trains run along this scenic route anymore. It could-ve been a tourist train, but I doubt it would be worth investing money in getting the tracks up to condition now.

Nice video Tim! The seaside was very interesting and the country is really beautiful - a refreshing sight after the winter: ) I liked the idea od golf carts turned into track motor cars. Btw, do you need a driving licence? :D Keep safe.

I really like how you've stitched together the car and rail cart footage. It is quite impressive how en-sync you've managed to get it all. Good stuff -

The most amazing back country there is a part of NZ I could happily disappear into, having driven over the roads and ridden on railcars love it still

How long has that railway line been disused? The rails don't look rusted. And those little towns you passed through looked like post mad max, lol.

It was ticklish. Kinda ticklish a mug of hot coca is on a wintry day. I thought I was a 'Trains' purist, I thought you were too. glad you are not.
