My next planned rail tour to Switzerland has just been cancelled, so once again I-m looking closer to home for video content. As a youngster Eastleigh was one of my favorite spotting locations and I was due to spend a couple of hours in Southampton next to St Denys station, just down the line from Eastleigh. It had been a while since I last took my camera to a station on the South Western mainline, it was an interesting experience, gone are the EMU-s I-d grown up with, such as the REP-s, TC-s and VEP-s. Locomotive hauled passenger trains used to be in the hands of a Class 33 or 47 diesels and occasionally a Class 71 or 73 third rail locomotive would put in an appearance. Even the consist of the freight trains has changed, the oil tank trains originating from the Fawley oil refinery, along with the gas tanks from Wytch farm no longer run, mixed freights are a thing of the past, although the number of container trains originating from the docks has increased dramatically. In this video I spent an hour or so watching a succession of modern trains passing through the junction station. The variety is just as interesting today as it was before the turn of the century with passenger and freight trains originating from all over the country. I have included some special trains, the 2009 Eastleigh Works Centenary open day, along with shots of the trains I used to see on family weekends away to the New Forest. Another thing that is noticeable is how much video cameras have improved over the years Ant-lio: Rail transport in your country is something wonderful and unforgettable, starting with the different types of trains, routes and stations, without forgetting to praise the landscapes along the way. Thank you for your documentary!
