I arrived in London the day before I was due to travel, giving me time to look around two of London-s iconic stations. This was the start of the 2022 Railway Touring Company -Alpine Steam Express- tour to France and Switzerland, participants were due to meet the tour manager at St Pancras International station at 7 o-clock the following morning. Catching a train from my home on the South Coast to London that early in the morning was cutting things too fine, so opted to stay in an hotel close to Kings Cross station. The map at the beginning of the video was the headboard of my hotel bed, one of the best maps I-ve ever see showing the boroughs of the city. The area that once comprised the goods exchange yards, gas works and coal depot located in a triangle bounded by Regents canal and the rail routes into King-s Cross and St Pancras stations has been transformed by a sympathetic redevelopment that keeps many of the facades and features from the original buildings. I enjoy walking around the King-s Cross development with its shops, cafes, exhibition halls and bars. Next to the canal is a footpath offering fascinating views of both the boat life and the trains using St Pancras station. A couple of shots show our progress through France and Switzerland to our base for this holiday at the H4 Hotel in Solothurn. The following day we set off from the nearby station to Luzern, where we watch trains at the main station for a while before joining -Stadt Luzern- the first of three steam powered boats featured in this video. Following a scenic cruise on Lake Luzern, we leave our boat at Vitznau to ride the first of three cog railway trains featured in this video to Mount Rigi Summit, after taking a few photos we join our second cog wheel train down the mountain to Arth-Goldau from where we make our way to Thun by train for an evening dinner cruise on Lake Thun aboard -Spiez- the second of the three steam boats featured, after a very pleasant evening, including a visit to the engine room we return by train our Solothurn hotel. Another day, another adventure, this time we set off from Solothurn station to -Neuch-tel- to board the third steam boat featured, the -Neuch-tel- for a cruise on Lake Neuch-tel, Thielle Canal and Lake Biel. At Biel our group split, some returning to Solothurn by boat while a few opted to take the train back to Solothurn via a circuitous and scenic route involving changes at Basel and Brugg. The very dry, hot weather caused another of our planned steam days to be cancelled due to high fire risk, so I decided to make the most of my -Swiss Rail Rover- ticket. I joined another group mem-ber for a trip to the steepest cog railway in the world, the -Pilatus Bahn- followed by a scenic train ride to Engelberg. This video doesn-t cover all the trips made on this holiday, please lookout for more of my Swiss adventures on this channel. This video was filmed on the Railway Touring Company-s 2022 -Alpine Steam Express- Tour. To find out more about future European tours

Fantastic video, Tim! It looked as if you were very lucky with the weather for the whole trip. The steam boats were great, and I had memories of a less-glamourous paddle steamer trip to the Isle of Wight 70 or more years ago on a Sunday School annual outing, for which we'd saved up threepence a week all year (in old money, of course.

The coal wharf on the Regent's Canal was turned into a nature reserve many years ago, it's now the Camley Street Natural Park, an unlikely but very attractive oasis between the northern end of St Pancras station and the new development on the other side of the canal. Thank you, Tim. Wonderful video. :)

A tip for everyone visiting central Switzerland (the area around Luzern): make sure to buy yourself the Tell Pass. This includes free rides on local trains, cable cars, boats, as well as discounts to museums, etc.

Those old railcars on Pilatusbahn are most interesting too. Dating from 1937, I find (to be replaced by something new and boring next year -. I like the period ammeter and voltmeter in the cab.

Absolutely fascinating trips on the boats. The engine in Spiez lookes brand new. The wheelhouse on Neuchatel certainly is, with new electronic equipment in the engine room

A little bit of everything Tim. Very interesting. It's amazing that the machinery on those boats is so clean, not sooty and greasy. One word describes it all, - awesome! ---

50: 03 Apparently, there's also a narrow-gauge line that runs to Interlaken. It was pointed out on one of the Lorirocks777 videos I've recently started watching.

Thank you Tim for an extremely interesting video! It was particularly good to see 'Stadt Luzern' back in operation after her recent refit.
