welcome to this trip report bound to Stockholm Airport (ARN) with the very good Arlanda Express train - TRIP INFORMATION - Railway company: Arlanda Express Train type: X3 From: Stockholm Central to Arlanda Airport (ARN) N° of train: No number Duration: 18 min Price: 18
Date: 2024-01-09

I am Canadian, the train from Toronto Pearson to Toronto Central Station (downtown ) is about 16 CAD around 12 Euro, looks like we Canadians are doing things better and more humane like. True that the trip is not on a 200km/hr train but it does the trick. Also true that the geography of Stockholm is more demanding and infrastructure more costly to build. In Vancouver from YVR to downtown is about 4 CAD using the skytrain ( Metro/tube/underground ) about 20 minutes ride. However I have a short connection in a couple days and will use the Arlanda Express so I can be sure to catch my flight in time. I took a flight with connection in Stockholm and I didn't checked before purchase but there is a 140 km trip between 2 of Stockholm airports, Skavsta to Arlanda ). Pay good attention in the future at these things. It will take me 3 busses and almost 4 hours to cover it, after 9 PM first landing.

The ride is so expensive because our neo-liberal government at the time -really- wanted to privatize the construction of the Arlanda line against the original wishes put forward, so the companies who ended up building the line and running the shuttle, A-Train, could essentially set the price at whatever they wanted because they'd be guaranteed no competition until 2040. That's why SL commuter train riders have to pay a fee when exiting at Arlanda C station even though you're still in the Stockholm region when at Arlanda. The parliament later decided that the way all of this was done basically was the worst possible way to build a rail line to Arlanda because as it turns out, no one wants to pay 30 euros for a ride this quick and short.

This must be the most expensive airport shuttle by train. In the other end og such scale, the train to/from city in Tbilisi, Georgia, is said to cost 0, 50 GEL equal to 14 Eurocents. But I do only find one departure a day.
It is also very cheap to go by train from Bangkok city center to old Don Muang Airport, not to be confused with the new one.
Back to Stockholm, I believe all train transport to Arlanda Airport is subject to a high contruction fee. Used to pay down construction of the line. Such is not uncommon, I can mention Brussels and Sydney who do collect the same.

The airport rail link in ARN is a ripoff in general. This does have got a history but nonetheless it is very disappointing. Even if you take a commuter train from Arlanda to the centre, you have to pay an extra fee to either enter or leave the train station where the commuter train stops at (which is not the one where Arlanda Express stops at. It is okay that Arlanda Express exists for that extra bit of comfort but its not okay that you have to pay extra fees if you use other trains. You don't have to pay an airport station fee in Oslo either.

While I do agree that the price is expensive as hell, it's a cheaper price than a price of 575 SEK for a taxi that takes also longer (by like 30 minutes compared to 18 minutes) + that this is an airport shuttle. If you would want a cheaper alternative to the city, then you should take the commuter train (158 SEK for a one-way ticket through a gate and a ticket with the public transport for 75 minutes) or the shuttle bus at the price of 109 SEK or 119 SEK if you pay in-person.

The price is absolut insane for such a short journey. You can take a -normal- regional train to Arlanda that takes about 10-15 minutes longer, but it is less than half the price. Here in Germany you can travel about 500 km in an ICE for 30- although DB is not famous for beeing cheap. About 10-15- would be a fair express price for this journey.
But with tables and a restaurant car, this could be a decent intercity train.

reply

I would het the slower but a lot cheaper sj train personally. That is too expensive. Like at Heathrow with the Heathrow express and connect trains that are overpriced. Everyone gets the Piccadilly line on the tube as it is a lot cheaper but a lot longer. I guess these services are aimed at the rich and business men. For normal tourists the slower and cheaper option is usually the nest.

Sweden is so expensive!
We stayed near Arlanda airport because hotels in Stockholm were outrageously expensive( not that the hotels near the airport were cheap either. No question of using this train. Used hotel shuttle to get to Airport, then using a transport card took local bus to Marsta station than a commuter train on to Stockholm.
Still, enjoyed out holidays there.

Train nerd corner - An EMU doesn't have -engines and coaches-, that makes it sound like a train with a locomotive like the one pulling out from the other platform as you walked towards the ticket office. If you want that level of technical detail, you could say it has two powered coaches and two trailers, but you could just say it's a four-coach EMU and most will understand.
reply

I don't know why peopl keep on saying it's overpriced? I think it's a reasonable price, super convenient, clean and fast! 25 USD approximatively each way, I think it's a good price! Taxi will cost you 80 USD and probably the same if not more expensive to take an UBER. You decide but I think that train is the best overall! I loved it and will take it again next time!
reply

I love the AE, used it many times when going to Sweden to meet family and friends. It is pricey, although if you sign up to the newsletter occasionally they have deals. It is so convenient if you-re needing to get to the airport quickly, but if not there-s a decent bus route as well.
reply

In Italy you pay something like 3 euros for a 20 minutes regional train ride. I admit that the trains aren't at the same level of the swedish ones, but it's a robber to pay a euro every minute of travel, even considering that the trains are perfectly clean and on time there. Shame on them!

The TFW WAG 1st class service from Cardiff Central (UK) to Holyhead (UK) which runs once in the morning on a weekday down from Holyhead to Cardiff, and once in the evening (17: 15) from Cardiff back up to Holyhead, you should try that, the food is very good.

I live in stockholm and rarely use this option. However there are discounts, (2 tickets - Regular price 598 SEK - Discounted price 379 SEK. I don't think many people pay full freight
or if they do it's on the company dime.

reply

The high price. well, how much cost other means of public transport from the citycentre to the airport and how long does it take to get there? To get to Heathrow there are several possibilities. at very different costs!
reply

That fare is high. The UP Express airport train in Toronto Canada (25 minutes from Union Station downtown to Terminal 1 at Pearson Airport) is $12. 35 CAD (-8. 48) but as a senior I pay $6. 40 CAD (-4. 39.
reply

Are you surprised by the price? It's a private company. Most transport is subsidies by the state. You makes your choice and live with the consequences of the glorious, and badly named, free market.
reply

Is it expensive? Yes. But no more expensive than say; the Heathrow Express. Sydney also has a dedicated train that you pay a premium for. Berlin Tegel outer either a cheap slow bus or an expensive taxi.
reply

I've taken that train. I didn't think they went 200 kph, but they're very nice trains. In addition to the high-priced fare to Central Station, from that point I had to take a taxi to my hotel. :/
reply

I like the design of the train, seats are comfortable too & the bathroom has always worked,
Look at SJ, always something wrong with them either the door, lock, flush, sink or no soap.

reply

I was just in Stockholm the other day and I saw no use for this, save and except for if you're in a dire rush.
Flixbus for $5 just upstairs from here was great at the early hour I took it

reply

Used to live in Stockholm but never used Arlanda Express because of the price (you can take either an airport bus or a commuter train+bus combo. I am glad to experience it here
reply

you should try the airport express train from Oslo Central Station to Oslo Airport. departing every 10 minutes and very comfortable, also with a nice interior design
reply

It is less expensive when travelling in company, 2 for -35, 3 for -45 or 4 for -55. And it is much less expensive compared to taxi + it takes a half of the time.
reply

Arlanda Express might be good if you are in a hurry. But if you are not, the Airport coach (Flygbussarna) is just as convenient as the train, for half the price
reply

Yes, it-s expensive but it looks wonderful. I-ll plan to use it in July as a nice, unstressful start for my long trip home. Thank you for this great video.
reply

I love the Arlanda Express! I always try to book as far in advance as possible and travel with other people to get the best, cheapest prices!
reply

Bus 583 from the airport to Marsta station (18 minutes, then the train from Marsta to Stockholm centre. Much much cheaper.
reply

Why does this train even have customers? That price is insane. People should stay away and demand more reasonable prices.
reply

Looking for power outlets in the floor? Seriously?
I agree it's a horribly expensive ride, even by Swedish standards.

reply

The today's price for one way is 320 SEK but if you bring another 3 people with you it will be 620 SEK (group ticket.
reply

I hope this is not news for some of you but Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo are all in a different financial league
reply

Been on the Arlanda Express several years ago. Was going to conference in Stockholm, so my office paid!
reply

What a coincidence! I just rode on this today from Arlanda to central station. Good video as always! -
reply

Very expensive to take this train. Even for swedish people like me. It's fast but bus is a lot more cheaper.
