Welcome to this new trip report, where I will sacrifice one again for #TrainScience lol When DB took over Westbahn's fleet, they launched these weird overnight service between Vienna and Germany. Is it okay to sleep onboard one of these trains? Well, let's find out - ! - TRIP INFORMATION - RECORDED IN AUGUST 2023 Railway company: DB Train type: DB IC 2 or KISS From: Vienna Hbf to Stuttgart Hbf Time: 7h22 Price: 47, 90- on DB's website for 90 days ahead of departure, I was traveling on Interrail Pass
Date: 2024-01-09

There are even longer -fake- sleeper trains from or to Vienna, with departure from or destination in Rostock main station.
For example: IC95 started its tour 20: 21 from Rostock main station and went over Berlin, Leipzig, Halle, Jena, Nuremberg, Munich, Passau, Linz to arrive in Vienna main station at 10: 45. A long journey, spanning all across Germany and Austria. Nowerdays it seems like the connection was cut; but there are connections around the same time with 1 change in Leipzig main station.
And they probably went from and to Vienna for the same reasons: the trains get their service in Austria.
Oh, and they used a similiar type KISS IC2 from Stadler aswell: 3
Edit: Oh well, should've given this video at least 4 minutes; D

It's about time we get some real sleeper trains here in Germany. It's just the perfect solution for when you travel long distances with not that much time. Like for example when you-re going to a distant town for the weekend, so you get on the train Friday afternoon, and you want to spend as much time as possible in the other town, but you also have to be back in your hometown Monday morning. You have to sleep anyway, so when you sleep for 8 hours during an 8. 5 hour train trip; it's like if you had travelled all the way in 30 minutes. If you see it from the perspective of how much time you lose for travelling, sleeper trains are actually faster than airplanes.

Nope! Had to ride this from Munich (Dep 00 32) to Vienna (Arr 06 15) back in June, as my Eurostar ran late and I missed my onward connections.
In a word, HORRIBLE. And I was in first class. Its just a commuter train, hellishly over lit, slow, stopped everywhere, just awful. Avoid like the plague.
I should have stopped over night in Munich, but I would have forfeit my HOTNAT waiver, so had to grin and bear it.
Ours also had the 20 minute Windows blue screen of death/reboot at Passau. We also had the strangest sounding conductor ever. He may have been on magic mushrooms, or been one of Satan's minions.

I regularly travel with ICE trains and except for some instances usually they-re not crazily crowded so I thought that a night train would be easily doable as it would be less frequented and you could easily sleep on 2 seats but I was SOO wrong. I think many other people also thought the Nightjet was too expensive and decided to take the ICE from Vienna to Hamburg bc that 12h train ride was absolutely packedddddd. People were even sleeping in the corridors it was really bad hahaha but I survived and it was doable as a young person

This is the worst train model of recent times, that was allowed to run on German tracks. The fact, that it runs as a night train is a total abomination. Usually these will be cramped with people stacked as sardines, sitting on the floor, sleeping on their luggage and it only gets worse the closer the morning comes, because to make things worse normal commuters will also use it as a means to get into the big cities.
AVOID AT ALL COST! !! Seriously, take a bus instead of riding this shit.

btw: the coach of the nightjet is in my opinion more comfortable than the couchette if there is no one or at most one passenger in the compartement. this is because in the old coaches you can put all the seats together to form a giant matress that is much softer than the couchette bunk beds. therefore if you are two people i always recommend checking the -reserve entire seating compartement- option instead of two bunk beds in couchette since often the price is not too different.

It's not a -fake sleeper train-, it's just not a sleeper train. This is a regular IC service, when booking your tickets or searching for your connection online, it will be specified whether or not the train includes sleeper coaches. There are supposed to be quiet zones on this train however from what I looked up on this specific connection, so you might want to look into that next time if that's what you want, or just book a train with sleeper coaches.

My biggest and the only complaint regarding these trains is the overhead storage. It's so thin that even a thin laptop bag with nothing but laptop inside doesnt fit properly. A similay train also runs from Vienna to Rostock. How can the storage on a train that runs so far be so poorly designed. They trains look no different from a RE double decked train, how come the REs have better overhead storage?
reply

I mean, why run it empty, it looked to me as if there were enough people who were using the service that night, so if it's gonna need to run to vienna anyway, let people who are willing to sacrifice comfort use it. Think this is a good move from DB. To me it seems like a more roomy alternative to Flixbus, cheap, and you can stretch your legs easier, with power outlets, so I mean. why not.

For the NC headset I can recommend buying earplugs, and putting them in as well. It really works, I had to do it, when there was a party in my apartment complex with heavy bass all night round. Earplugs on their own don't suffice. NC headset is also not sufficient. But with earplugs for one part of the frequencies, and the NC headset, for the rest of the frequencies, it covers well.

I don't like that, maybe for 2 hours max, but sleeping in -seating- wagon which was historically always lowest pleb class (normal sleeping only coupe class) and still it is, 1-2 seating wagons sometimes connected with normal bed overnight trains in certain countries by old tradition as cheapest choice. Next problem with normal night trains is short bed lenght usually.
reply

I like the IC2 KISS. The seats are WAY better than these on the Twindexx IC2. Especially the lounge seats are great as they remind me of the old days when such seating configurations were standard. The standard DB trains with their boring single seat configuration just can't keep up with that level of comfort. I hope they don't modernize these trains at anytime soon.

This train is sold as 'IC' (=Intercity, most probably IC460. Experienced travellers know, that this is NOT a Nightjet (= NJ. The creator of this video should learn how to read during the booking process and know some basics. Just because this train runs at night, it doesn't necessarily provide sleeper seats/cabins. The equipment used is clearly shown during booking.
reply

the reason for these stock movements is maintenance. these former westbahn now db trains have still a maintenance contract with someone in vienna. while they are used during the day among others on the connection stuttgart zurich, they drive on some days through the night to vienna to be ready early in the morning to get their service.
reply

The definition of a night train is that it runs during the night. Not that it has a bed to sleep in: ) There are many night trains across Europe having only ordinary seats. Even NightJet services have coaches with only normal seats. The service in the Video is just a night train and seeing the amount of passengers, it's a useful service.
reply

That isn't a sleeper train. It's not called a sleeper train either. People call it a night train instead for a reason. Also in the video itsel it is a night train and now i am confused.
And everything is suited for night services if you prefer a cheap price and are a student. (From my experience)

reply

it _is_ still a night train though, just not a sleeper
DB runs a number of overnight ICEs as well - i took one from munich to hamburg and back just last week. i found it extremely useful being able to just arrive in the morning, not needing to get a room or otherwise figure out how to spend the night

reply

I don't actually believe that it is forbidden to dim lights in trains in Germany. I used overnight ICEs several times, and in about half of them the lights were dimmed between 23: 30 and 04: 30. They definitely almost never do it in regional and Intercity fleet. And it sucks so, so much.
reply

I am not sure why the title says -fake night train-. It is NOT a night train and it was never supposed to be a night train. It is just an overnight service in a regular train. This is mentioned in the video, but the title still claims it is a night train or at least a fake night train.
reply

To be fair, in germany, even though the train has a very bad reputation, we still love to use it. So the long distance as well as the regional ones are usually always crowded. So i recommend always booking a seat in advance if you dont want to travel on the floor by the door
reply

I hate Deutsche Bahn so much. The audacity of calling this an IC even is unbelievable. First class might be fine but 2nd looks like a damn Ryanair cabin. I don't understand why they replace the old spacious IC trains with basically modified regional trains.
reply

pretty sure DB doesn't advertise this route as a night train route, much less their train as a night or sleeper train. It's a standard long range connection like any other ICE, IC or EC that just happens to run at night
reply

10: 00 I don't know what happened, but inside the Schengen are they basically never make any checks. Even travelling by car, they have removed the border posts - sometimes including the old buildings.
reply

Hey man, have you ever thought about riding the Amtrak Keystone Service between Philadelphia and Harrisburg or maybe taking the Pennsylvanian train out to Pittsburgh for a video?
reply

Interesting. The return seems to take an hour longer but its a decent idea between Stuttgart and MUC or MUC and WIE but as you suggest only as a back up plan the whole way.
reply

its just not a sleeper train, yes it goes overnight but there are also many ICEs going overnight. You can't just ride an intercity and then complain its not a sleeper train lmfao
reply

We really need more trains like this I think though. Its not possible to have night trains always running with couchette and sleeper carriages, yet we need more trains overnight
reply

nice to see how my train comes from Vienna, after its arrival in Stuttgart central. that kiss continues its journey at 6: 17 as IC 2370 via Karlsruhe to Constance.
reply

Looking at these seats, u appreicate the old british/endian train seats which are sleeper coaches - u can sit snd then turn into sleep position
Its mostly nice -

reply

Seems they've been pretty active re border checks lately. Happened on my Nightjet too, but once they saw my Canadian passport they simply said -have a nice day-
reply

Brave to publish clips of people with faces without blurring it. Everyone of them could sue u due to violation of the data protection act in germany.
reply

Never knew there is a fake night train. You sure that it is fake or do they run a fake night service just to rob people-s money after buying a ticket.
reply

Actually, in these trains, no one should book first class, since the seats are the same as westbahn made no difference between first and second class
reply

A night train doesn't mean automatically A sleeper train. Bring some booze and some snack's with you and you will survive! enjoy
reply

Nice review. The train looks amazing, but I think I'm gonna take a Nightjet instead for my first long european train trip: D
