Guten tag! Flixtrain, the low cost operator, either you hate, either you love it. I saw dozens of opinions regarding Flixtrain and back in 2019, I actually loved Flixtrain, it's a cheap alternative to DB. They've recently introduced a new interior. but is it any good? - TRIP INFORMATION - Date: August 2023 Railway company: Flixtrain From: Frankfurt Südbahnof to Berlin Hbf Time: 3h54 Price: 9, 99- + 10- extra
Date: 2024-01-09

Comments and reviews: 35

Reminds me of the time my wife and I were in cologne for a holiday and had to use the trams to get from our hotel to the city centre in the middle of the heatwave, I was like a dog looking for shelter on the trams shifting from side to side to sit in the shade, couldn-t believe there was no a/c on the trams and no windows to open couldn-t leave the door open either for obvious reasons, spent the afternoons in and out of stores to avail of the a/c, still loved our stay and cologne is such a friendly and welcoming place to holiday even went for a paddle in the Rhine, that-s when I found out why the Roman, s founded the city there, that-s another story folks

Me and my Grandfather took FlixTrain in the Summer of 2022 from Cologne to Berlin, it was overall good, however for us, the Power Sockets didn't work, and on our journey back from Berlin, because there was no A/C, everyone had to get off early at Hannover due to people literally falling over.
I definitely suggest that until they fix the AC, that you buy stuff like water. Also, contrary to what Flixtrain Staff will tell you, their tickets will NOT be compatible with DB Trains.

reply

Certainly impressive for a privatised operator (which I hate the concept of) to provide such a cheap service. Especially compared to the UK where it would cost more for a return to the next town along the line. Maybe even a one way ticket. But it seems like there are some big compromises to get down to that price unfortunately (for now. Other people talking about the ICE train being double the price, but still relatively nothing compared to British prices.
reply

Oh man. From what you-ve shown us it-s worse than DB ICE/IC nowadays. I won-t take a ride with Flixtraim on these conditions. I stay at DB pay 60- in advance and get 30- back while claiming passengers rights with the same train delay. On the other hand getting the chance of sometimes AC, clean waggons and water or paper towels on the toilet -. 20- good extra invest.
reply

In northern Germany you really need A/C only 4-5 days in a year. There is no point to add A/C especialy on coaches 50 yo, that originally don't have it. It's a huge investment with very little return on investment. And on top of that it's a low cost company. If you want all the extras you can have it, but the price wont be 10, it'll be 100 or more.
reply

High cost is really not the problem of DB intercity trains imho. Prices are very reasonable if you book in advance. It's the terrible reliability and lack of punctuality which makes the experience terrible a lot of the time. Both of which Flixtrain doesn't really improve upon. Only more investment in the track infrastructure can fix this.

Back when i traveled by plane during a few years, i made 5 flights on low-cost carriers (Ryanair, WizzAir, Vueling. they were never as horrible as what is shown on this video: s
Low cost train is great idea, but still needs to cate to people's needs. But then of course, is it still possible to have a reliable journey in Germany?

reply

Are you bloody kidding us - the bathroom was clean? Of course it was bloody clean. No water. No soap. No towels!
You are also really conning us saying that Flixtrain is a -great- option.
Flixtrain is sheer crap, no matter how bloody inexpensive.
Thumbs down for your con job of a review.

I used flixtrain two times, ome time it was also heavy delayed and with one waggon less, so many people had no seats. Also both time nearly every toilet was out of work and closed. Its also crazy how much the waggons are shaking at 200 km/h
So all in all I'm really no fan of flixtrain-

reply

Delays aside, what is the Flixtrain regular fare and compared to DB?
I lucked out riding an A/C train in China years ago. with A/C not working, no open windows, and fully packed to the point I stood 3 hours until reaching the destination. How I survived that is still beyond me.

reply

so they run just as late as DB does haha. I always found that funny, Germany is known for its efficiency, but the trains are ALWAYS late. Flixbus is actually operating in the US now, I have to wonder if Flixtrain might pop up running some old Amtrak or VIARail hand-me-downs.
reply

I never understood why people would take a Flixbus, Flixtrain or anything Flix at all. I mean if you're that broke, you can always hitchhike. The misery that you go through traveling like that, and on top of everything you have to deal with trashy people. Thanks but no thanks.
reply

I have yet to travel with a Flixtrain, but I will surely consider it. I think Flixtrain is offering something bigger companies fail to offer: Affordalbe public transport (I mean, DB can be good in terms of price when ordered well in advance) but not for these prices.
reply

Interesting that the announcement on the train announced that there will be new trains with air conditioning in 2025. Flixtrain itself has not yet made any announcements about this. It will also be interesting to see what kind of trains these will be -
reply

The Germans have -rules- on many things. I forget the name for quiet-ness- but on Sundays or after certain hours at night or early in the morning OR in certain places - you might get a collective shush! from people or the Polizei might ticket you.
reply

Last time I checked Frankfurt am Main was kinda in the middle of Germany (or maybe the southwest, not the south. This title is kinda misleading. It sounds like you started in Munich. Munish to Berlin would be a real cross country trip.
reply

50 years ago these old slam-door coaches didn't have AC. but at least all windows were able to open and I doubt many passengers got heatstroke on hot days. Unbelievable running a train with no AC where only a few windows can be opened!
reply

So no Flixtrain for me at summer, good to know -. And btw, the railway crossing in the video after fulda in the small village (where i come from) is one 3 crossings left in germany with barrriers that a worked manually so far as i know.
reply

It's quite weird they don't sell drinks on the train. Ryanair is a low-cost operator too, but the food selling on the planes is like part of their business model, they probably make more profit from it than from the flight itself.
reply

Good. video, but I'll pass on Flix train. The only thing I like about this train is the low fare, but I want food and beverage service, AC, a smooth and quiet ride. and a comfortable reclining sea to stretch out and relax.
reply

That looked like a terrible experience - from the delay, to the tight platform, broken doors, no AC, uncomfortable seats, no wifi or other amenities, fights on board. Yeah low cost, but they don't have to torture people!
reply

You get what you pay. VerflixTrain is much less worth than their ticket prices.
Uncomfortable and unreliable, in my opinion this service quality is an insult to passengers. Viehtransporterklasse!

reply

flixtrain is all what the people dont linke on DB trains. old, no AC. delays. but it is cheap and nothing more. I will never drive flixtrain or flixbus, i like it more comfortable duo drive with ICE
reply

#TeamFreshAir You can plug your ears or wear headphones but what can a muggle do about the heat without a -?
This FlixTrain did not win me over tbh, I thought Ouigo was bad! This blows!

reply

Well Mr. Simply the price was excellent, the cars were nice looking. Though with no -air conditioning- DB would get my business.
I'm to old for that crap in today's weird weather. ---

reply

So the train driver said at 7: 17 that the old trains don't have air conditioning yet, but only the ones wich are coming in 2025. He also said that you can get free water in coach 100.
reply

If the NEC were to open up to competing train operations, I could see Flixtrain, OuiGo, and Megatrain all vying to run services between NYC and DC (but from Hoboken Terminal)
reply

9: 14 Well, I can be quiet while smelling the fresh air at the same time. It was the old days before AC trains came in. I hope the passenger got heat stroke is fine now.
reply

So why does DB have so many issues with delays? I would think this would be a priority to address if it isn't already. Just curious as a clueless American. Thank you!
reply

tfw I recognise the blocked entrance to the S-Bahn platforms which shows that you travelled during the summer holidays (maintenance work happened on that line.
reply

Ok, you get what you pay for. But Flixtrain is definitely the worst train experience I ever had! Took a ride from Stuttgart to Hanover maybe a year ago. Never again!
reply

When you do the seat check, the german voice in the background announce AC for new trains and wagons in 2025. So it seem's, you need to book in 2 years again.
reply

I would like to see train service grow in the US but if trains are more than an hour late, have temps that endanger health and are dirty, people won't ride them.
reply

From minute 6: 42, when you test your seat, the announcement mentions that there will be new trains from 2025, which will then also have air conditioning.
reply

This looks like hell on earth but still prefer classic carriages to high speed train.
I dont know why they went with this awful green/grey inside.
