This is day two for the special rotary snow plow on the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad. Yesterday the snow plow and the locomotives made it to the Colorado State line. Today they will go all the way to the top of Cumbres Pass, Colorado at 10, 022 ft (3, 055 m. Snow was much deeper then the previous day as well as icy. The two locomotives struggled all the way up Cumbres Pass with nearly constant wheel slip. Despite nearly every piece of equipment approaching 100 years old. It still works extremely well. A real tribute to the people who designed and built these incredible machines. The top of the pass was cold, windy, with light snow. The original plan was to have the snow plow come down the mountain for another mile or so for some more plowing. However thick ice covered the rails just beyond the crossing which could easily derail the snow plow. The railroad decided to play it safe and head back home. One locomotive with the rail cars and caboose left first, followed by the second locomotive with the snow plow. This year is the Cumbres and Toltecs 50th anniversary. Come visit the railroad. I've always wanted to see these rotary blowers in action, LOVE IT and it answered a few questions as how they worked, anyway from ONTARIO CANADA THANK YOU FOR POSTING, I AM IN MY 70s, and remember my grandfather taking me to QUEBEC city on a train pulled by a steam engine yep, and sleeping in a bed on the train, what beautiful memories. I think I was about 5 years old at the time. Anyway thank you from an old train loving old fart I wish the caboose were still at the end of the train today still lol And I love listening to the sounds of the puffing and whistles never get tired of it I will watch this again, and makes me think of my Grand parents they spoiled me ROTTEN Well maybe not too rotten? I love the song by John Fogerty ''cross tie walker'' one of my fave listen to it you might like it? I used to play it when I was in a band (lead guitar ) long time ago when my hair was plentiful and NOT gray Hope you don't mind my rambling on but you made a fan of your train postings for life

I don't care if middle east people get emotional or Europeans get pissed off. The real thing is the truth. And in the truth nobody stands. What Hollywood? Hollywood is like Vatican. ROFLMAO was founded by Germans for their propoganda. Same with BBC. BBC was formed for espionage by CIA. ROFLMAOYou think I don't know about your in er workings. Most of the middle east is in war with Westland Europeans countries and Israel is because they were betrayed. ROFLMAO you think I don't know real history. I know more than you kids know. Okay. Calling me gay or whatever by thinking you are hurting me doesn't so shit. Because I am straight like Stoopa. ROFLMAO hence I don't care if your puppy heart is hurt by my words. Because I don't care. To me I will give up everything for truth. Hell I gave up my life for truth. You aholes were ready to give me the CHAIR. ROFLMAOI showed them this. ROFLMAO do you know why? Because above all else truth gives me peace. I love my God. Above everything else. You don't know reality I know all realitiesnof individual people or how their conclusion came to be. Doesn't matter. I just know facts. And facts tell me I and you will not go along. ROFLMAOB3cuae you want me to accept some truth while obscuring the whole truth. I am not interest in your version of truth. I am only interest in facts as they are. Not how you make them. ROFLMAOAnd here I will ask you. Are we cool? Because if not. I don't care. ROFLMAO

It's lucky that some of this equipment was kept operating to this time when we now have such good quality cameras ect, so that at least there is a lot of good footage of the way these things used to be done back in the day. Pretty rugged old machine. Took a good bite at 34: 25, I didn't think it would power through all that. Compared with today's equipment, what a lot of man power. You've got at least two guy in each engine and then at least four in the rotary. Plus extra guys in the caboose and back in the day, extra help for digging things out with shovels and preparing food ect. Quite an operation.

Thank you for the fantastic video. I. m in my late 70's, live in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California and we often get snow that we call Sierra Cement. I have shoveled my share of that snow. I sat here in the warmth the of my living room and and enjoyed watching the rotary move snow. When the snow storm gets bad here Southern Pacific, now Union Pacific brings out their big rotaries to open Donner Pass. Some times it takes them two or three days to open the railroad. I appreciate the C&TS crews efforts at clearing the line.

I notice they never use whistles to speed up or slow down. And in the end if the video I think that would have certainly helped since they were appearing to ram or buck the snow. That only works with snow plows, not rotarys. Had the pilot been actually whistling to speed up or slow down like they did in past years I think it would have gone smoother in the attempts to reach the crossing at the summit. Very nice operation and well done none the less.

I really enjoyed both videos. The camera positioning was very well done. Sorry to sound negative but it would have been great to see more shots of the cleared path like the ones at 14: 50/29: 38 from both directions. Thank you for the effort made to create these videos. A reverse time-lapse from the caboose would be a great video.

Ever since I was a young kid, I've been amazed at the complexity of steam engines. I'm also happy to see some are still at work and many have been restored to still operate. The best I've seen so far is the Union Pacific #4014 'Big Boy' one of the largest steam engines ever built.

Steam, snow and smoke blasting high in the Rockies, whistles echoing off the hills, makes the heart stir with wonder, what a sight Look at the crew. no office types here. These guys are real men, dealing with nature, face on. somewhere the oldtimers gone on, are watching with respect.

hank you for taking the time and effort to return us to the Colored past of mountain railroading. I got to see the Snow plow work on the C&TS RR many years ago and it almost as exciting to night as being there in person. Its warmer, too. Thanks again
