I'd prefer to ride behind a smaller steam engine on a private line like the Strasbourg in Pennslyvania, or Cumbres and Toltec. Having the diesels there seems to ruin the experience.
I have a bit of love for Frisco 1522, but if I could choose beteween it and a British Rail standard 4 tank, i'd choose the tank engine in a heartbeat.

I cannot wait for the 844 to be under steam again. I recall she was used for the credits of the show shining time station, showing her as Union Pacific 8444. She was returned to 844 by the time shining time station first aired. And of course, she is after all, never retired.

I sure hope that the Union Pacific gets the 844 done for this years Cheyenne Frontier Days. Sat. July 23, 2016. Do you have any inside scoops? Will the U. P. Steam Shop be done in time.
- Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway -

You just answered one of my long time questions of. why do steam excursion trains add on a modern diesel unit? .steam locomotives pulled trains for years without helper locomotives. and now I know the answer. thank you for that Mike

Really enjoying your Train Talk series. Would like to learn the anatomy of a Diesel-electric locomotive. How do train breaks work? How do Radio controlled locomotives work? Are there Do's and Don'ts of train watching?

In a technical sense the first steam mainline excursions by preservationist was with 2 CP G5s. The first large engine to run these main line excursions was NKP 759 plus it ran the golden spike centennial.

1: 37 What locomotive is that? I saw it in a documentary once about steam giants, but I can't remember what they were called. They headed up iron ore drags out of Minnesota; that's all I remember.
