Hi, I’m probably teaching my grandma how to suck eggs though I feel I ought to mention that cross-cutting chain and ripping chain are different. Try and rip with a crosscut chain will feel like the chain is hopeless, no matter how sharp.
If I had to deal with that 8’4 cedar log I’d break out my home made Alaskan sawmill equipped with a sthill 090 and a rip chain and rip the log in two. I’d make sure that the log was sloped downhill as well. Make gravity work for you. I may even rip the log in three! Do the big cuts with the Alaskan and then move the cants to the bandsaw mill.

That was painful to watch. 1) Not clearing the debris before bouncing your tractor all over that scrap; 2) Not realizing that the ramps needed supports under them and finally 3) Hopefully you had someone close by to hear crys for aid if you got hurt. I worked in an industry that safety was #1 on EVERYONE'S mind. Jobs were planned well in advance to the smallest detail. Not only would you be fired, the site would be shut down and fines would be issued for allowing the job to be performed in that manner.

I l lived off grid for 15 yesrs. had it all, dependent on no one. but, someone didn't like my success. An arson fire while I slept, burning every thing I possessed, cabin, trailer, Toyota, solar, water, etc and I barely escaped with my life and the clothes I slept in. No food, water, shoes, phone, glasses nothing, 10 miles from nearest store.
Its a beautiful life if you can manage it. But there IS a darkside. best wishes!

City arbourist from Richmond BC. I think you know where that is. You are so meticulous in all you do. I was surprised at the hack job you did on sharpening your chainsaw. You should always do the same amount of strokes on each tooth inorder to keep them the same length. The other thing is you should always use a file guide to keep your file from going to deep. The deeper you go the sharper the angle which will dull faster

Yeah you did it. but your tractor is now worth less than half an hour ago. Same for your mill trailer. Everything is now used. Take more care. Work more safe. Clear your work area. I was looking at that plank side for 15 minutes while you drove over it 3 times, then used it to prop your ramp up. Come on your the teacher, acting like a novice.

Big hats off to you for rolling that log onto the mill! And to Fuzzy Tiger for the idea. Yes, it takes a woman - and a man. I have to say, it looked dangerous. I was concerned that the log might come rolling back onto you, even tho you wedged logs up against it. Big accomplishment. I don't think even the aliens could've moved that one.

My husband and myself and our teenagers have tackled logs that size and put them on our sawmill - we live not far from you and have lived on Vancouver Island for 53 years. Those size logs my husband rolled onto the sawmill using a cant hook - the best way to get into shape and stay in shape is having to chain the logs and pull them

Hi Jake, I've been watching you since the Tempe days. Been watching you work that oversized cedar log on your mill. It's too big for the mill.
I was wishing you first would clean up around the mill working area so you won't fall, and I was wondering where the saw wheel covers were Please work safer. for the fam.

whats crazy is. if me and everyone else donated just 1 dollar a week; youd make 2mill ish a week. thats just wild to break it down like that money wise. 90s honda has style and is better than a prius all day add a $1000 turbo kit on a 120k mile motor and youd still get another 200k out of IT with maintenance

Given petrified forest which is the presence of minerals in the wood. Is it possible that your cedar has started to absorb minerals from the surrounding soil that has covered it While petrifying probably takes centuries, the start occurs slowly. Put some support in the middle of your ramp.

Going out to eat is dangerous for your health. They cook with seed oils, chemically covered produce, and meats that are fed poison. Then you pay big money for it. As a senior woman I love to get a break from cooking and SIT DOWN, be served but it’s just not worth what it does to my health.

Why didn't you reinforce your ramp before you started rolling the log up Anyone can see that the weight of the log will break the ramp if you don't. For the future: get some old railroad rails to build your ramp out of. Then you'll have a permanent setup for rolling logs up to your sawmill.

Around here we use a come along attached to the mill. Run the wire rope hook side under gear side over. That way as you crank in the rope it rolls the log. This will rolll very large logs right on to the mill deck. Seen tractors go nose up when a ramp log breaks. Can be dangerous with forks.

I was going to suggest a ramp as well but I watched this after the live. But I actually like watching wood be milled. Just the fact that most of us would love to be able to mill our own wood and we don't have the means currently, makes me want to watch.

Don’t watch your videos anymore. Just don’t find it entertaining watching you talk for an hour. Miss your old videos with the whole family. So no I’m not out here anymore.
