How Giant African Rats Are Sniffing Out Landmines and Saving Lives Menachem Salomon: This may be an unpopular opinion, but - Landmines were generally placed in an area for a certain reason, i. e. war between two groups. If the war is over, it's wonderful to be able to clear the area and settle there. But there are still some regions of conflict, and the original (or a new) rationale for having those landmines in place is may still be relevant. Are landmines becoming illegal according to the internationally agreed upon Rules of War? Is that a reasonable and fair demand to make of a country that seeks to protect its inhabitants from dangerous invaders? (Where such invaders do exist and are actually dangerous, that is)

This is also an excellent argument for endangered species preservation - just 20 years ago, would someone have even considered this use for these rats? Same thing for innovations to cutting tools from study of rat teeth, or innovations to syringes by studying mosquito probosces, etc. How many more innovations and uses will someone discover for animal or plant species in the future, including animals or plants on the endangered lists? If the species are still around, study can unveil new innovations sparked by flora and fauna of all types.

Huh. interesting that the U. S. is a non-signatory. another shining example of well if it's not OUR problem. Either way, it does my heart good to see such efforts across the globe to assess this issue. I had no idea just how widespread and severe it was until now. I have trouble imagining what it would be like to live somewhere and not know for sure that the ground you or your children are walking on won't up and explode on you. The sooner we can eliminate such a reality, the better.

Until countries like the US and Russia stop producing and selling landmines to other countries it's always going to be a problem. It's too useful and cheap as an area denial tool for armed forces. So while countries like the US can supposedly be trusted to document and remove mines when they are done with them many of the poorer countries they sell these munitions to definitely cannot as it has been shown.

This is interesting. They could automate the recording of mine locations by having it log the GPS position each time the rat pack detects digging, possibly by having a robot guide the rat through the target area. Then a human or robot can screen those logged positions afterward. They could have a second rat go and screen the area before the final screening and removal to reduce rat detection errors.

Back during the Nixon Administration Taiwan was at war with Communist China. Land mine removal on Taiwans outer islands took years, and was thorough, but not foolproof. My son was teaching there just a few years ago, and Id been to visit him. He called me a few months after my visit and said, You know that big log at the beach where wed sit to dry off our feet? It had a land mine under it

Rats are taking over our jobs. First, a rat saved the entire universe from the snap. Now they are saving human lives from landmines. Be vigilant, people. We may be overrun by these rodents sooner than we like. /sBut seriously though hearing about landmines always remind me of Princess Diana and her love for humanity. Truly a Princess of Hearts.

I came to Canada as a refugee in the mid 90s from Afghanistan. I remember seeing many kids with missing limbs. This is still an issue today, and it breaks my heart. I want to thank you and you team for shining light on this topic. Also thank you for showing us real heroes like the people/animals in this video, that often go unnoticed in the news.

Harry should just stick with the end landmine campaigns and ditch talking about Fortnite addiction, but he can keep talking about the social media as it is interesting from his perspective as a person who has never had a social media and a wife who was active for a period, and now he has an Instagram. Also, those rats are AWESOME

I worked in the lab of a professor who had just got a grant to study these rats (this was years ago. I considered grad school with him which would have involved going to Africa and bringing some back to study their reproduction habits. I haven't thought about it for some time so I was so excited to see this story
