ZARA decided to post videos online to give insight into her reality of living with Tourette-s Syndrome after her tics got worse. The 16-year-old first experienced tics at the age of seven but aged 14, she said the situation -spiralled-. The teenager was also recently diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND, which causes fainting and seizure episodes as well as paralysis. A video of her having a COVID test went viral and people accused her of faking it but Zara hopes to raise more awareness about her conditions. Zara is passionate about music - she sings, plays guitar and writes her own music - and these are things that give her a break from her conditions. She has been on a journey to accept her conditions and that she cannot control it. Zara said: -It doesn-t have to define who I am, I can be me separately and just have Tourette-s and I can post about it, but that-s not entirely who I am

This is why I stopped posting about my Tourette-s and other disorders online tbh. So many people get accused of faking it. EVERY single friend of mine in the community who is open about it has been told they are faking it online, or even straight to their faces. It only happened to me a few times, but it was enough to create a deep rooted fear of being doubted, shamed, bullied, and judged. Having tourettes is hard enough on its own. Many of us struggle with anxiety and feelings of embarrassment, the last thing we need is people reinforcing these fears. It-s so stressful, painful, and sometimes isolating.
I avoid people who disrespect me and situations which impact my mental health. I hate that I no longer feel comfortable spreading awareness. It shouldn-t be this way
That being said, I am so grateful for the lifelong friendships I have made because of my tourettes. It has shaped me into the person I am today. It gives me a reason to laugh every day and it has blessed me with some of the kindest, funniest, most empathetic friends I-ve ever had. I focus on the positive and have learned to love myself. There are some tics I will always hate, but I don-t hate myself for having them. I can-t control it so I shouldn-t feel ashamed or guilty.
(Btw we-ve all been diagnosed, but they don-t owe people proof of their disorder[s] to be respected)

I completely understand what its like. I had had tics my whole life but my step parents abused me when i ticed so i learned to supress even tho they would end up in seizure like motor tics for hours. it took me 22 years after it started turning into seizure like motor tics to find out i was trauma supressing. I have since learned to let my tics out and the internal turmoil i was in almost completely vanished. But I was really nervous at first that people would think I was faking it because i had hid it for so long or throught it was JUST FND. Im learning to love my tics, even the tic attacks because it means my body is processing things the way it needs to. I have since been a lot more calm and been finally able to reach management stage with my complex case. I think it is abusive to say that some one is faking a very real condition. None of those commenters are doctors so how are they even qualified to tell the difference?

If you think someone's faking a disorder, get educated, do your own research about it, learn about it, the whole reason why disorders are faked is because of the lack of education and the huge amounts missinformation and misrepresentation in the media, you can fight fakers with knowledge and normalizing mental disorders and making people less attracted to use them for clout. You literally don't know anything about people's life and unless it's obvious you can't say they're faking it or not, I think Zara is one of the only people I know who have shown their diagnosis but I haven't find that in my own so I won't assume. It's like if someone told you -I'm allergic to peanuts- and you're like -doubt it, send me proof- or smth.

Fellow tourettess and FND been having seizure like symptoms when i have severe panic attacks since i was a kid. I had a mom who just would accuse me of throwing a tantum and dispite the only reward i would get is being grounded or hit by my step father. Having people accuse me of faking now is just soul crushing.
i am so glad that you are able to know and work to deal with it when you are young, I found that i would just try to hide it, and eventually my firends would find out and dispite my insistance to just let me deal, they try to help and then i always have lost those friennds because they think im doing it for attention. Its really insulting too since I dont need to get attenton that way.

That's why instead of looking for anything to claim that it's fake and deny it maybe we should learn more about that. Every person is a different world and some people can experience symptoms in a more severe or mild way. Saying it's fake and justify yourself saying that people who fakes illness harms people who actually are ill it's not an excuse. Obviously, probably there are people who fake it for fame but accusing everyone of being fake it's harmful for the people who suffer from this because they may feel that no ones will believe them and then it will be more difficult to ask for help. Not only with Tourette's syndrome but also with mental disorders

i think most people still think all tourettes is, is swearing. What they don't get, is that it is a neurological disorder. As much as you could joke about it and take it lightly, it's an illness in the brain. Unfortunately there are people out there who fake illnesses and it makes it even harder on those who truly struggle. But bless you and your creative and beautiful brain. Reading those mean comments and being able to smile and move on unaffected shows how strong you already are!

no one wants to take ticks, if you develope them for real and experience that you can't stop them, when you feel the build up, many would think again. Those who are not in her body or walking a day in her shoes, and give yourselves permission to say it is fake, show me your proof that it's fake? if you can do that, then your comment will be valid!

so weird how a bunch could believe the other tiktoker who was so obviously faking her condition but when this girl ACTUALLY has it, no one wants to believe her. it's really upsetting. I hope people can be more educated about this syndrome and be more caring towards people who have it: /

-I'm a cute teenage girl and I just can't control myself, I just have to make puppy sounds, to make other girls at my age, not so cute, try to emulate me-. Just don't give them attention, is my idea!
Or what?
That seem to be the underlying media MSG.

Its the people faking tourettes syndrome and tics that make people who actually have it feel invalid
To all the people with tourettes or tics out there, dont listen to any bad thing anyone says about you and you can talk to me if you want

reply

You can-t really be 100% sure if someone is faking stuff like this so idk why people who aren-t experienced with these things or aren-t educated at all about them are trying to say that they-re faking because YOU DONT KNOWWWWWMWW >: 0

I-m so glad you have your music to help support you through your journey. It-s great that you have also made a good friend who seems to be understanding and accepting of the Tourette-s. I believe you have a bright future ahead.
reply

It-s sad, there-s so many fakers out there that are faking for clout they are telling people like, Zara that their faking it. Zara is not faking it and it-s disappointing that people think so. Stay strong! -

They are wicked l have seen all this they should be in your shoes and your mums. Some people in social media unbelievable no compassion. Eh If they know how the brain operate will be considerate.
reply

I-m not saying in any way that you are faking it because it-s quite clear your not however I can understand people thinking that because people have faked tics in the past.
reply

To all the Tourette's Syndromes fakers: I hope that you see the harm that faking your tics does, because people who actually have it are now being accused of lying about it!
reply

I-m so pleased she is able to get support. This sounds incredibly tough. So excited to see her social media progress. She is creating a lot of awareness which is amazing.
