Our children have no rules - my extraordinary family

PARENTS Adele and Matt, from Brighton, England, believe in an all-natural approach to bringing up their children. This means that they reject modern medicine and traditional approaches to education. Ulysses, 11, Ostara, six, and Kai, three, have never been to conventional school or been vaccinated. Instead, Adele and Matt have opted to practice a method called -unschooling- where the kids choose what, how and when they learn. While some critics say that the couple are irresponsible for not formally educating their children, both Adele and Matt say that their kids are happy and healthy: -Our approach is all about autonomy-, says Adele. -We always find a way to take them on trips and expose them to things that are enriching so I don't feel that they do miss out. The couple have risen above the criticism they receive, encouraging others to do the same: -One way isn-t right and another way wrong. It's just a difference. I think we need to just accept differences-, Matt said

I honestly laugh at the comments most of you make, this couple really gives their children 100% every day and strengthens their free will unlike the mass that brings children into the world to satisfy their own repressed (a fake superficial love, and prepares them to become the next good robots of the system. I don't know do you feel proud for bringing lifes in this worl and making them just copy paste of your own desires? At least they are working every day really hard with their children and guess what? This is love, true love. Not just an effort that when the child will grow up you can give a good answer. like
Child: where have you been when I was child?
Parent: I was working all day so you could have everything (I was a good robot to help you be a good robot as well so I was paying a nanny to give you my love.
Child: But I only wanted was your love and your presence.
Parent: Yes but I had to work to afford all your needs and that is how you became a successful person in society.
Child: Ok maybe you are right but you know something? Although your pride for me and my success. still I am not a happy person. I feel like I missed something on my way. I smile a lot every day but is not real. It looks like a to do list for being part of society. Deep inside me I feel empty and like all we are pretending we are happy because we achieved social goals and that is how we are supposed to be.

As a parent I am trying to get their point. Both parents have their hearts in a good place but also as a parent they are literally setting their children up towards being dependent on the government. Nobody here can judge them as those are their children however we can opine. Children need an education whether formal or at home. They need to learn to read and write. Children also need to learn boundaries and rights/wrongs (just part of being in a society. I-m sure they are teaching them that.
Nonetheless in a functioning society there are rules and consequences (minor or severe) no matter how you look at it. If there are no rules/ consequences then it-s basically chaos. Furthermore, there is a short window where children can be influenced by their parents, after which they can-t.
Parents need to parent. Children need structure and guidance. If you can not provide that then you are setting you children up for failure in society.

This is basically child abuse.
The boy looks lost and confused. Not being able to read is cruel. He is being denied the wonderful opportunity of sparking his imagination to help brain development and opening up a wonderful world of discovery to him which he will never know exists.
The world is a very frustrating, confusing place if you can't read. If he suddenly decided to go to school he would be way behind and unable to cope. Childrens brains are like sponges and early learning is vital otherwise the parents are creating a frustrated, illiterate and ignorant child. How very cruel.
These so called parents are basically neglecting their children's normal educational, emotional developmental needs which they need to thrive. Boundaries and routine create a sense of security and value.
Those poor kids will grow up confused and behind in everything.
They are being set up to fail

I live a bit like them tbh it-s amazing how people think chemicals, medications, plastic etc is a normal part of life and weird without it. I do kind of agree on the education too I just went to university caude everyone else was doing it I knew it didn-t help me at all had o gotten into art l, photography and creativity sooner I would have been farther along. I regret wasting time at uni rly. I think it-s good if they respect the kids that do want to go to school as if they want to be a dr etc they do need a degree but most ppl don-t rly need one let-s be honest.

A parents job is to guide their children by making decisions in their best interest until they're capable enough to make decisions themselves. If you ask any 5 year old if they'd rather watch TV and eat cookies vs learning how to read, they're going to choose the former. This is completely selfish and ultimately damaging to these kids.
I bet their dog has had his annual vaccinations but god forbid they give their children immunity against polio -
Also, the patronising smile the mum does when explaining her parenting style gives super weird vibes.

Don-t get it twisted. What FREE RANGE PARENTING is SUPPOSED to be was just a movement to a throwback to when children could play more independently, and was solely against paranoia based helicopter surveillance parent. The real free range parenting which is a movement pioneered by Lenore Skenazy and endorsed by eminent psychologists like Jonathan Haidt and is NOT THIS. Because REAL free range parenting is STILL PARENTING. With Rules and limits expected in any civilization family in civilized society.
reply

So What's Wrong with Free Range Parenting I Don't Think it's Wrong Because when I was a Child I Always do Whatever I want at all Ages and if I Had 6 Children Abouslty Yes I Would Let Them Do whatever They want Just Like I Did in My Childhood of the ages of 10, 11, 12, and in Fact All Children of All Ages Have a Right to do Whatever They want and This is The United States and All Children Have Free Will Too!

These parents usually get a documentary made about them nearly each year lol. Not only will they be emotionally scarred by their parents but also have a lot of pressure put onto them by the comments (which are still their parents fault. Thank god the comments are attacking the parents rather than the kids or else that'll be a nightmare for them in the future

The reason that they started to live this lifestyle is because their fathers died of a heartattack because of stress. It is important to respect the atonomy, but wothin limits. Children need guidance and rules. The reason they can live like this is because the society is organized and people obey rules. Without rules the world would be unliveable.
reply

My parents largely expected us to meet our own needs, though nothing to this extreme. It's a form of neglect that puts the blame on children for not being their own parents, an expectation that they are developmentally incapable of accomplishing. I hope the kids can make it through okay, but the uphill climb is going to be very rough.
reply

What they do is not actually living without rules. Having no rules at all is inpossible. It's just giving away the responsability to make them on kids. Every kid would naturally prefere to have fun then to do something importent. Schools are not perfect, but they are necessery for gaining experience in social relations.
reply

--how they-re gonna live when they are older, that-s gonna be their choice-. Nope. Because you-ve taken away from them all choices which require education. The proper statement would be --how they-re gonna live when they are older, that-s gonna be their problem-
reply

Setting them up for failure.
It won-t work unless their kids decides to live in
the middle of jungle or an island with no other humans. How will they be able to live in normal society that has general rules and regulations.

reply

I don-t have structure or rules for my daughter. I let her have privacy and independence since she was a toddler. She-s now a honors student and top athlete. Let kids make their decisions. It won-t destroy them.
reply

I have a question, are your children vaccinated for newborns? I'm really stressed about this. because I'm having a baby And my husband will not allow the child to have any vaccinations. Hope you will see my comment
reply

As a person who wants 3-4 children I absolutely want to give them freedom but there are consequences and boundaries that need to be put in place so my children don-t turn out like idiots in the real world
reply

Wouldn-t be surprised if the whole lot of them end up either in jail, shunned by society or both. They need rules and boundaries. These parents are setting their children up for absolute disaster.
reply

They have a mixed flock of chickens? Those eggs are gonna be fertilized
Is this the family where one of the kids just peed on the floor on live TV in the middle of an interview?

reply

would love to know what they-d do if one of their children were to have epilepsy and seizures which could require blood tests, hospital visits, medication and maybe even surgery
reply

-if your vaccines work so well you wouldn-t need more of them- so your defense is because you need boosters vaccines don-t work? Right. keep on living in your little bubble.
reply

The part of the story i don't like is that they give up on a wholesome lifestyle when allowing processed foods. I thought they were all about natural options? Go figure
reply

Poor them living in england. They should move to africa or south america where there are still many traditional tribes living simple life based on hunting and planting.
reply

This is one of the few situations where when the children is taken advantage of in the future, in whatever fashion, it will absolutely be their parents fault.
reply

How do they get jobs when older fill out job applications no education read or write can they use lap tops cell phones etc my grandson 8 adhd he can
reply

What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
reply

The key issue with this approach is that at some point the children inevitably find out that life has rules, and will struggle facing them.
reply

I don't like to judge but, is anyone else worried about the kids social skills and how they're gonna adapt to adulthood when they get older?
reply

Love it, love it, love it! Love hearing others story's & view on this way of living we very much chose to do with our children.
reply

3: 29 That is how you know that this is staged. If the kids really where allowed to eat whatever they want, they would be fat.
reply

You let your kids do whatever? Are there any boundaries? If your child where about to walk into traffic, would you allow that?
