War and Nation Building in Latin America: Crash Course World History 225

In which John Green teaches you about nation building and nationalism in Latin America. Sometimes, the nations of Latin America get compared to the nations of Europe, and are found wanting. This is kind of a silly comparison. The rise of democratic, economically powerful nations in Europe came about under a very different set of circumstances than the way nations arose in Latin America, so the regions are necessarily a lot different. But why? John will explore whether it was a lack of international war which impeded Latin America's growth, which sounds like a crazy thing to say, but you should hear him out. Citations

When it comes to wars I beg to differ. Some of them lasted quite a while and were destructive. Here are two examples:
- The War of the Pacific from 1879 until 1884 with Chile on one side and Peru and Bolivia on the other. Guano and nitrate deposits in the Atacama and Tarapaca region fueled tensions between Chile and Bolivia for decades and at one point Bolivia signed a secret treaty with Peru in 1873. Then at one point Bolivia wanted to increase taxes on the Nitrate and Railroad Company of Antofagasta (a Chilean company that is); protests ensued as that tax increase was seen as a breach of the 1874 treaty between Chile and Bolivia. Eventually the Chileans occupied Antofagasta on the day the company was supposed to be auctioned off and the war began. Just to name a few battles: Iquique, Angamos, Dolores/San Francisco, Tarapaca, Alto de Allianza, Chorillos and Miraflores etc.
- The War of the Tripple Alliance from 1864 until 1870. One word: brutal. A majority of the Paraguayan male population was killed. Still have to read more on that conflict though.
MY suggested references for the War of the Pacific:
-Sater, William F, Andean Tragedy. Fighting the War of the Pacific 1879-1884. Nebraska University Press 2007
-Farcau, Bruce W, The Ten Cents War, Chile, Peru and Bolivia in the War of the Pacific, 1879-1884. Praeger. 2000.
-Dennis, William Jefferson, Documentary History of the Tacna-Arica Dispute (it also contains translations of primary documents pertaining to the war.
It's quite fascinating. In the case of the war of the Pacific Chile got lucky in the sense that, as opposed to its neighbours, it was relatively more stable politically and that the seizing of the nitrate regions allowed to pay for war expenses for the remainder of the war. Did I also mention that there had been the war of the Confederation? (Chile vs the Peru-Bolivian Confederation, 1836-1839.

THE UNITED STATES IS NOT AMERICA.
Thank you for saying that the United States is not America, excellent your answer, it was an ignored truth.
AMERICA IS A CONTINENT, NOT A COUNTRY
America really is just a continent, North America and South America, alone are two divisions of a continent.
As for example: Western Europe, and Eastern Europe, are divisions, of Europe, a continent.
I do not understand why the Anglo-Saxons want to make believe this, good luckily in other languages, America appears as a single continent.
For Europeans (Except Anglo-Saxons) America is a single continent, not a country.
In French it is l 'Amerique, in German it is Amerika, that is to say only the Anglo-Saxons against the speakers of all the other western languages (That we are very many more.
In no official document of the United States does America appear, to refer to your country.

-We should be reminded that when it comes to picking winners and losers in history, we are not at the end of history but in the middle of it. -
I've always found fukuyama's premise of the end of history with the domination of liberal democracies deeply problamtic, misleading and tinged with hubris as demonstrably evidenced with the Corona Crisis, the greatest pan-issue since WW2. We are seeing a devolution into authoritarian and illberal democratic states and a stagnation of rights in liberal ones. Anyway I found this similarity with south American issues with south asia striking as we may be headed to a predicament the likes of regressions in Argentina and unrest in Venezuela

A lot of people in the comments seem to -unintentionally- forget that Venezuela is right now, ruled by a bunch of criminal socialists with communist wet dreams, it's much easy to blame -the empire- forever.

Western European nations are not more successful because of colonialism. They are more successful due to liberalism, capitalism and technological advancement.
