In the book: The Romance of Reality, the author explain this phenomenon.
He explains how the different structures of nature function in levels. Everything can be summed up as problems create complexity. For example, nature is random, but that randomness, which can be seen as a problem for biological systems, created genetic changes, for example mutations. Now in the squirrel's realm you can see that the problem of not being able to open the box creates a new way of thinking.
So the author of that book says that nature works as a fractal structure.
So there are different levels in nature, for example randomness creates mutations, problems create complexity, disease creates medicines, crisis creates solutions. And so the squirrel creates other new solutions.
I highly recommend that book, it's called The Romance of Reality: how the universe organizes itself to create life, consciousness, and cosmic complexity from Bobby Azarlan.
That book blew my mind. Honestly, as a physicist he's incredible. As a person he's impressive. I hope this comment helps the right person. And I also accept criticism.

From a programming standpoint, emotions are extremely useful for problem-solving.
Joy = things are going your way > keep doing it.
Fear = things might not go your way > do it again.
Anger = things aren't going your way > try harder!
Sadness = things can't go your way > get help.
Disgust = you don't like that thing > give up.
Hope = things might go your way > try again.
Boredom = let's just do something else.

After my plastic bird feeder was empty, a squirrel ate a hole through the cover. He then crawled inside. That is when I saw him from my window; all square and funny looking through the glazing. He scrambled when he saw me approaching and scooted off into the trees!
I wish I had seen his frustration at not getting what he wanted so that he resorted to Breaking & Entering my feeder!

Evolution is incapable of innovating whether something is useful or not. Maybe you should use your intelligence and dumb the dumb luck worldview. Our planet has not improved one iota because of this insistance on intelligectualism. Go back to comon sense and reality and dump the secular religiousness.

I don't even think this is a good explanation. If someone taught u the fridge opens one way, you would assume its just stuck if it doesn't open one day and u would knock it over trying to open it
