Very cool! So interesting. I know tarantulas a bit and it's fun to compare. Tarantula males often have hooks on their front legs (tibial apophyses) that they hook onto the female's front legs and lift her up to expose her epigastric furrow (the entrance to her spermatheca, which is an internal pouch where she stores sperm so she can fertilize at will) It's really interesting to see similar hooks on the orb weaver's chelicerae (the appendages that house their fangs) The closeup views of the emboli twisting into the furrow were really cool too. I've watched a bunch of tarantula pairing videos and that twisting action is something I've never seen before. (Tarantulas unfold their emboli like a jackknife and then slide it in) The inflation pumping action is new too. This was a super cool video, thanks!

You know, I always felt like the insects, when they take flight, are just like old men enjoying their retirement with a party. Since, you know, we all think about butterflies and such living for only a day but it's blatantly false, it's just the final stage of their life, finally freed from working their arses just to enjoy a bite.
Thus, a spiderweb directly above an insect's metamorphosis hub feels particularlt cruel. It's like watching a 65 yo person reaching for the bar with their first retirement paycheck in hand and being immediatly hit by a truck.
Cute fangs tho.
