Hi, I produced this episode of Deep Look. Many of you have asked whether the red fire ant queen makes it onto the raft. Linda Bui, professor of environmental studies at Louisiana State University, told me she often saw the queen riding on top of the raft when she studied how red fire ants make them.
And it turns out theres no free ride on an ant raft. Even the queen has to work.
Sometimes she carries bundles of eggs in her mouthparts, Bui said.
Sadly, we didnt see the queen when we filmed our episode.

I really tried to love and care about all animals and creatures but when I was doing a army field training exercise at night and when you were bounding up to an objective and you dive to the ground for cover and land in a fire ant nest, it Engenders a deep and burning hatred for these terrible creatures. I think everyone in the army has an equal hate for these.

As a young boy I lived in Louisiana. Was well aware of these nasty little critters. We had some white powder to put on their nests in our lawn.
I mean hey. They have the rest of the world to make a nest. Get off my property!

Imagine being in a kayak and crashing into one of these unknowingly until you just star getting stung all over and than looking around seeing millions of ants in your boat. What are you gonna do lol.

I've encountered one of these rafts in a giant puddle near my local park and when I saw it I almost fainted, its a sight to look at but once you know they are ants, its a different story

What about the queen in this case? Where do they protect the queen or what if the queen gets females or hurt in the moving process? Then what happened to the colony?

One time I found a fire ant on the bottom of my toe biting me. It was just one ant, so I felt the burning sensation. It wasnt too bad though.

Love the idea of ant pirates setting sail and setting up shop in a new location, leaving a path of destruction

When I was a child, one of these ants bit me when I was touching a tree.
Fire ants hurt, I hate them

Think about how many millions of years it took for them to learn that the larvae should go on the bottom
