This video guides you through the basic operation of a chiller, making use of animations, illustrations, 3D models and real world photographs to help build your understanding. This covers the basics of a centrifugal chiller in a typical office building. By the end you should be able to identify the main components and the main circuits of a chiller. There is a short test at the end also

Hey Paul, In the min video duration of 7. 31 Min, i have a abit query. Where is the evaporator chilled water come from that circulate from evaporator side to AHU and then AHU return back to evaporator chiller. Since u draw its different component from condenser. Because what I've understand from cooling tower then enter the condenser only circulate within the condenser and then return back to chiller right or the water is pass to TXV and evaporator? or only circulate Cooling tower and condenser?

Hey mate just got into chillers at hospitals and running triple Trane chillers and system uses only two at a time as set up and alternates weekly between the three so eventually one of them gets a rest.
Really been somewhat scared and overwhelmed by the complexity of the entire chiller idea at any job and try not to work on them as I haven't a clue.
Your videos however, i'm hoping, will dissolve some of those fears and advance me as a refrigeration mechanic.

Thank you so much for this- my dad worked in these plants but he treated the water that runs through these systems. He passed in early January 22 and while I did a lot of his lab work I dont have as much of a mechanical background and I really appreciate this because it helps me understand what Im working with when I walk into a mechanical room.

Only problem with the labeling is that according to the laws of thermodynamics, why would the heated water (12c) from the building want the transfer heat from it to the refrigerant (which is at a higher temperature of 27c? It makes sense if the labeling is flip flopped from water to the refrigerant side.
reply

3: 20 how does the 27C refrigerant from the Condenser Return picks up heat from the 12C Chilled water return? Doesn't heat go from hot to cold? Shouldn't it increase the temperature of the Chilled Water Return and decrease the temperature from the Condenser Return?

Can you point me in the right direction if you have a video on different ways to control the water/temp of each ahu/ fcu. Eg if the ahu1 still requires cooling but the space conditioned by ahu2 is at the the required set point. How do the valves direst the water.

I was looking in internet, bought one book, took part in one day course, bought another book and all these trials have not given me the explantion which you provided in 15 minutes video. Great thanks from Poland: )

I want to build a miniature centrifugal chiller to provide hydronic air conditioning and as an experiment to see the potential of how a chiller can pan out in a residential or light commercial environment.

Thanks for this video, sir in chiller if oil leakage ( very small in amount) appears from filter side, can we open that filter area and chamge the gas kit? do we lost oil, if yes approx how much amount

Back in the 90s we operate and maintain Trane Centravac chillers 4-unit 320 tons R-12 at Samarec head office in Jeddah. Hi to all my workmates in case you're watching this video

I'm a mechanical engineer designing nuclear power plant HVAC system and I'm charge on the chiller system. It is very helpful for me to understand the chiller system. Thank you: )

What if a heat exchanger is attached to the unit, the medium inside the shell of the heat exchanger will heat up, as a result. What is this heat exchanger called, anti chiller?
reply

some refrigerant system off air conditioning use solenoid valve after expansion valve. What is the function solenoid valve? if not use solenoid valve what gonna happen?
reply

So the water passing thru the evaporator and condenser is separate? The condenser water will go to the cooling tower and the evaporator water where it goes.

I recommend to the people watching this nice video, maybe it's a good idea studying the refrigeration cycle before. It will help them understand better.

In the first video you said the condenser was on the top.
In the picture diagram you said the condenser was on the bottom.
Which one is it?

This video is fantastic for training and upskilling purposes. Very well explained. Well done! Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing. Cheers

Thank you for all your videos. Very useful. You got written Evalorator instead of Evaporator on the main screen presenting your video.

thanks, is realy great job! please if you can do a video over RSWS (Refrigeted Sea Water System? this system works ofen on boats.

I really appreciate the time you put into this video. I definitely liked it a lot and it was very very helpful! thanks a lot

i like the way you explain it. very clear and interactive, reminding me being teached in school back then
reply

Thank you for being patient enough to break this down for a clearer understanding of how a chiller works
