we look at the manual transmission system of automotive vehicles. We look at how transmission works, why gears are needed, What is a manual transmission, gear train, compound gears, main parts, shaft, clutch, helical cut, Synchronizer sleeve, Synchronizer blocker ring, splines, Synchronizer hub, stick shift, gear stick, reverse gear and much more. I think manual is better because for my type of car, which is a compact hatchback, manual gearboxes DO get quite significantly better fuel economy than auto gearboxes. This is, of course, comparing apples to apples. For compact hatchbacks, you will not find sophisticated dual clutch transmissions neither will you find continuously variable transmissions. I'm talking about cars in the range of 300k ZAR and under. You won't find a CVT in a car for that price range. What you will find are torque converter automatic transmissions. Torque converter transmissions for compact hatchbacks generally come with 4 forward gears whereas the exact same model manual counterpart will come with 5 gears. That's a huge plus because it makes the engine quieter on the freeway and it improves fuel economy by a more significant margin than you would honestly think. I average 5. 9 litres per 100km which is pretty damn good if I do say so myself.
Another good plus is that manual gearboxes are the most simple design that a transmission can possibly have in a modern car. Where there is simplicity, there is ease of repair, less chance of fault, and cheap prices for repairing IF something does go wrong. For the most part though, torque converter transmissions when compared to manual are more or less just as reliable. Manual may be slightly easier to maintain and cheaper to repair and less likely to fault, but the margin between auto and manual regarding this is minimal and I will admit that freely. The margin between fuel economy is much more significant. CVT and DCT transmissions will get better fuel economy than your old school manual gearbox, but remember that I am not comparing apples to oranges in this scenario.
Last but not least, even with a compact hatchback that outputs a very modest 77kw of power, driving manual is so enjoyable and so much more engaging than automatic. It's fun, and that's another plus to me.

100% first-person, anecdotal experience, but also 100% fact:
Manual transmission leads to fewer accidents. The driver has to use two hands 90% of the time, and knowing the gear subconsciously allows us to be more aware of our speeds and depth perception.
Even when I would go over the speed limit, I was so aware of the road. And knew how my car could handle. I never felt like the fumbling idiot slamming breaks in a traffic jam constantly and seeing coffee go everywhere, while looking at the phone. I never did until I bought an automatic. Lol

When an engine stalls after you release the clutch too early, is it because the engine cant overcome the inertia of the car? I was thinking stalling out in that way had something to do with the synchronization rings not getting up to speed fast enough, but now that I think about it Im thinking its just that you suddenly require a lot of torque from the engine and it just cant deliver that much torque that quickly, which is why you very slowly release the clutch, letting it slip a little to get the car going a little faster so it doesnt jerk forward.

appreciate your work but whenever u show shifting of gears, the output shaft stops rotating, but in real life when we go from gear 1-2 or 2-3 the car would be moving the output shaft which is connected to the wheels will keep on rotating even when the clutch is disengaged. so i would ask u to please make a video on when we shift gears from 1-2 or 2-3, and the clutch is disengaged. how the counter shaft gears synchronises with the output shaft.

If you are gonna be driving on an extreme roads and draging trailers and something like that it could be better that you choose the manual transmission and vise versa for automatic transmission if the roads are stable and balanced like no more potholes or deformed roads then of course automatic transmission is the best option and also when the traffic jam started it may run you crazy in a manual transmission

Manual is better. A) driver can shift at best time instead of when shift computer or vacuum actuated valves dictate. B) manual transmissions are ridiculously more reliable than automatic transmissions. My wifes car is automatic and had to be rebuilt at 215, 000 give or take a few thousand miles. My car is a manual 5 speed and still drives great after 315, +++ miles. Original clutch too

3: 49 Slight and somewhat trivial correction, but a correction nonetheless. A lot of people make this mistake, but the Imperial units for torque are lbfft, not ftlbf. Ftlbf is a measurement of work, not torque. In fact, just look at the metric measurement: Nm. The measurement of force comes before measurement of distance, not the other way around.

Both of The Transmissions are Good. I Prefer Manual Because Shifting Gears Manually Feels More Fun and a Manual Transmission Can Tolerate a Bit of Water If It Goes Inside it But Automatic is Destroyed in Seconds. I Prefer That Manual Transmission in Better Even Though Now 1/100 Buy Manual if they Have a Transmission Option.

Manuals and auto are both really good depending on what your purpose for the car is. If its just getting to point a and point b on a normal road, auto is fine, unless ofc you like driving manuals. If youre doing more than that, its best to control exactly when shift happens for more power at key moments.

i am pretty sure the gear shift animation for 4th and 5th gear are the opposite. the 4th gear animation should be same like 1st, 2nd and 3rd mean while the 5th gear are direct drive from input shaft.

they said manual transmission is much simpler than automatic transmission.
After I watched this video, well, I don't think manual transmission looks simple. lol.
Great explanation btw.

Really you guys you amazing, I was always puzzled on how manual shifts were engaged but now I am aware. I have never driven any car but now I am certain, and I think I will quickly cope.

3: 42 doesn't also the extra weight from the wrench also making it easier to turn a bolt? If you made a wrench the same length but also same mass, would you lose out on eddiciency?

The biggest sin ever was trying to remove manual transmissions altogether!
Also, anybody else have an unhealthy obsession with the way gears work with other gears!

This is hands down the best, easiest to understand, most detailed explanation of a manual transmission I've ever seen, and you even go through the math, too! Wonderful!

The manual transmission is the best piece of engineering that humans have made. a true engineer made it. amazing. Im always amazed by the manual transmission. Brilliant.

This is easily the best video out there. The others fail to mention the splines on the main shaft and the roller bearings.

I driving a 49 years old manual transmission car about 4 years and now I understand that I'm ready to fight against Thanos

Absolutely amazing video. Studying for class right now and this just really helped me understand everything so much clearer!

But why does Reverse gear not have the diagonal teeth like the others? And why does it not have a synchronizer cone?
reply

I've drived all transmission cars including dct, torque converter.
Yet I like manual. it's fun to drive

reply

Me personally I've owned 3 different vehicles all of which was manual and all of them had 300000 miles on them
reply

Manual is better, because I want my transmission to change gears ON COMMAND, not when it gets around to it.
