Main electrical panel explained - Load center - service panel Rich: I also question the shared neutral/ground bus. If you land neutrals on the ground bus, even in the main panel, the jumper between the two buses becomes a current carrying conductor and not a reference. The ground bond (ground rod wire) and all equipment grounds go to the ground bus, not the neutral. All neutrals go to the neutral bus. There are other discrepancies. Ground wires are green or green with a single yellow stripe, not yellow. All outlet and switch terminal screws are color coded. White for neutrals, green for grounds, brass for hots, and sometimes bronze or brown for certain switch legs (usually 3-way or 4-way switches.

These videos have somehow achieved an unmatched level of informational digestibility.
I say somehow because Ive seen the same topics explained in what I thought was a similar manner, yet have never been able to comprehend & understand the presented information as efficiently as Ive been able to with these. For example, I dont think Ive ever seen such a quick & simple, yet understandable explanation of the 120/240v relationship regarding the transforms center-tap & the connected common rail. Clear & simple gold.

I'm from Malaysia and we used UK-base electrical system. When I start watching this video, I was confuse why there are 2 live (hot) incoming, I though one is live, one is neutrals as they are oscillating the current flow, but then suddenly the neutral come in into the picture. WAIT. What? Ohhhh, US have different transmission system! Got it. We have 3 lives incoming supply too for bigger house but we always see that the neutral wire is the one completing the transmission circuit, i. e, for current oscillating.

So for the last point made do I have this right?
Say we have a house that was plumbed with copper pipe. Then some years later a renovation was done which replaced some of the copper runs with PEX.
If the 2nd floor still had all copper pipes within it's walls, but it was being fed from the basement using PEX, then technically those copper pipes on the 2nd floor could be energized if an electrical wire made contact with them.

i want to replace my main 100amp breaker inside my load panel with a 200amp breaker and add a new circuit with a 50 amp 240volt breaker for my welder my question is how can i shut the power off to the main breaker to safeley replace the main breaker is there another main inside the meter upstream? and is it legal or okay to shut the meter off inside the meter box?

Great video, but I do have one question that boggles my mind. Is there a good reason that there is no gfci or afci for 240v circuit, even on outdoor or wet environment use? As far as I understand, not only code does not require it, but no stores are even selling one. 240v is far more dangerous than 120v, correct?

My neutral and ground bus bars aren't bonded in my breaker box. I think they are by the meter though. My stove wire only has 3 wires, black - white - bare. They are thicc. Does the bare wire connect to my ground bus bar or my neutral? How does the clock work on it with no neutral/120v?

I was trying to get a light to work in the laundry room and accidentally shorted power to the box from the switch. It threw a breaker for the garage door. The switch for the light still had power. Can shorting to the switch box cause another breaker to trip through the ground?

Question: If nothing in the house is on, completely empty, nothing plugged in, no lights on, water heater off, ac off, etc. Nothing is using electricity. All breakers on, except hot water and ac. Does the meter spin/Is power being used? Just off of the resistance of the wires?

I work with a lot of electronic circuits over the years as a field engineer on medical devices, but I never delved into electrical for housing. This was extremely interesting and pretty simple when you get right down to it. Great video.

I always wondered why the electricians hooked to our copper entrance line, nowadays though we come into the house with poly instead of copper so now they connect to an exposed piece of rebar in the basement somewhere

The power supply shown is line to line 240v, in the lighting part the power supply from 1 circuit breaker and 1 line from the neutral bar, its 120v as mentioned earlier. so lighting fixtures should be rated at 120v.

To all of you want to be electricians. Do yourself a favor and leave the panel work to pros. change outlets and switches if you dare, more citizens are killed in the home effing with electricity than any other reason.

Im going to turn off the big breaker open up the panel to see if the bathroom is actually grounded or is it a false ground(there is three wires and the third wire isnt bridging the Gap between neutral and ground)

can anyone tell me why my panel only has 1 bus bar and no ground wire coming from the electrical companies end? however the ground wire from my bus bar goes into the ground

I am a bit confused by the role of the grounding bus bar shown in the schematic. Can the ground wire connect to that bar instead of the neutral?

Now I realized why India has 240 V residential and Western countries have 120V residential. In India we only use 1 hot 1 neutral from the meter.
