MS-DOS did not compete with IBM's PC-DOS. They were the same operating system. Microsoft wrote PC-DOS for IBM, which had some IBM specific features in it. They then removed the IBM specific features and released it as MS-DOS for non-IBM PCs. They did the same thing with OS/2 and Windows. They wrote OS/2 for IBM, but because IBM insisted on releasing the PC with the Intel 286, they wrote it in 286 assembly language, and wrote Windows in parallel in C so that it was compatible with the next generation 386. If you're interested in accurate information about Microsoft and IBM, read the book -Computer Wars: The Fall of IBM and the Future of Global Technology- by Charles Ferguson and Charles Morris.
