I tried finding Hidden Gems on AliExpress AGAIN! (Part 4)

In this video we will be having a closer look at 8 different products I got from Aliexpress. Aliexpress is famous for featuring the newest products/ICs when it comes to electronics but finding those can be a bit difficult. So I tried finding the hidden Gems not only electronics related but in general what I think could be useful. Let's get started!

The yellow and gray wire strippers you showed aren't bad tools, you just used them incorrectly. They aren't general wire strippers; the yellow one is meant specifically for trimming the outer jacket from twisted pair telecom lines (CAT5, etc) and the gray one is meant specifically for prepping coaxial communication lines to have their connectors placed on, which is what the diagram on the side of it is (the lattice drawn on the cable represents the outer shielding mesh that is over the dielectric core in something like RG6) That one in particular I know they advertise as working on copper wire in general but that's specifically what it's not for and I think it's a translation issue.

the yellow tool is actually a punchdown tool (to connect telecom and network wiring in punchdown blocks, the wire stripping bit is almost an afterthought, and it shows. (the punchdown part is also pretty meh, but it's better than trying to punch cables in with the tip of a knife or a screwdriver)
For a few euro more, there are very nice punchdown tools, but I haven't needed mine since I got out of IT/Networking.

Of course, if LED strip is really good, it is reasonable to invest some more time and program the communication. I was doing that before, but I am unfortunately not interested in LED strips. EDIT: Doh, instructions are in Chinese. but according to what I see, if they were in English, it should not be that difficult to make a small control program for RPi or Arduino class microcontrollers.

Seems like these Chinese designers need to start adding filtering caps on the outputs. I know that UPS thingy is bad for RPI (I got a 4 position 3A 5vdc one for UPS on my RPi4, all that noise on the inputs cause mine to stop working after a bit. way too much noise. guess if I solder a 100uf and 1pf capacitor across the outputs it might clean up/smooth the noise
Keep em coming!

great stuff like always man! You know GreatScott, you could do a follow up series where you get some of this products that almost could be very good and try to improve them, like the ups and the power supply, for exemple, making a adicional pcb to smooth the output, or change some components to make it usable. I would love to see something like that!

I use the last one a lot, at least the controller part.
Hooked it up to a 18V Bosch battery and use it for small electronic projects. Also perfect as you can see how much power your project draws.
Way cheaper than a bench power supply and even portable: )
Even used it to diagnose a broken windshieldwiper pump on my car: )

reply

I will do me. Yeah, those cheap power supplies don't have the best looking output, but c'mon, what do you expect at that price? And comparing any little power supply to an actual lab, bench top power supply? I usually love all your videos, but this one was a little extra critical of extremely cheap shit.

Those cable strippers look universally terrible and horrible to use compared to a standard cable stripping knife. If you search LY 25-6 on aliexpress, you'll find what I'm talking about. Cheap, fits in your pocket (although bare blade, so beware, no piddling about.
Edit - Ah, I see you have one: )

Hey Scott, I just wanted to let you know that I think there was a translation error in this. It should be activated Carbon/Charcoal and not activated coal for the filter.
Coal is the Oily/Tarry stuff from the ground. Charcoal is just made from burning carbon rich stuff like wood.

Since you showed that tiny fan as a fume extractor, here's a project idea:
Build a portable electronics workshop in a suitcase you can use literally anywhere, kinda like a cyberdeck, cramming as much features into it as possible, battery powered, perhaps even solar
why? just because

The shrinkable wire connectors look interesting, I have never seen those. Great if you only want to connect one or two cables and do not want to get out the soldering station. Plus, the heatshrink adds an additional layer of protection. Maybe I will order a pack: -)

Interesting new ) Scam: 24VF battery. The F is important, as the battery as only 12V. There are way higher numbers as well, eg 128VF, 888VF, 928VF (if I am correct, these are 18V batteries. Of course, the capacity is egual to the sum of the capacity of the cells

So I've just had to trash a Mini USV a few weeks ago I was using to power the cable modem. Add to that the video you made about the difference between W and VA.
I wonder do we know about any quality mini USVs and wall warts / power bricks out there?

reply

For the 12v UPS, do you think a 3. 5 hard drive would complain about the noisy output? It only uses that voltage for the spindle motor after all, and I'd love to have something like that for my rescued HDD that I use via USB.

China is not famous because it's history, but their shabby product and cheating, being one of this nation I can tell most of them did not learn from the teaching of ancestor, luckily still good people did make good products.
