Vikings Of The East: Igor & The Kievan Rus' Kiril: It's a bit ignorant to show map from 650 ad and there showing the Hungary as a Christian kingdom in the lands if Thrace! Let me tell you something, by this time these lands are Byzantium and there lived the south Slavs mostly from the tribes of Severi, Smolyani and thr tribe of Strunentsi, where we still have places named after them! 680 in today part of Romania comes the tribe of Bulgars with Khan Asparuh who fights the Byzantium Empire in 681 and established the first Bulgarian Khanate later empire in alliance with slavs. The hungarians came 2 centuries later and together with Byzantine army fought bulgarians, then Bulgarian emperor attacked their camp killing almost everyone so after the rest of hungarians came and saw what Bulgarians have been done they moved west and reached Panonia which us still their land.

Its a great video, but there is one common mistake i like to comment on.
It was not because of overpopulation the Viking age started. (Not even to day when we are many millions more, there is even close to a overpopulation here in Scandinavia)
The Viking age was a pure religious war started by the Christian Europe.
It was triggered by many things the Christians did, like when the French slaughtered a whole village of non Christians in to days Germany, and when they banned trade with non Christians.
That pretty much forced the people of North to go from trade to war, and that was when they developed their famous war ships, the Viking ships.

Here is a fact. Everyone with Blue Eyes or carry the gene of Blue Eyes are descendant of a common ancestor.
It was a rare gene mutation.
New research shows that all blue-eyed people share a common ancestor. This person lived more than 6, 000 years ago and carried a genetic mutation that has now spread across the world. . All blue-eyed people have one ancestor in common, born around 6, 000 to 10, 000 years ago. Blue eyes are caused by a gene mutation. Sep
So Slavs, Germans, Norse etc are all related

it was fortunate that the Vikings kept such detailed accounts and unlike other historical groups uploaded all their records to the cloud so we have all this info and their documents. i hope the next video on Vikings Of The East/The Kievan Rus' talks about their fiscal and monetary policies. also more information about the Kievan Rus' national healthcare system would be nice to see. what became of their national rail line? can't wait to see all this information in the next video.

Decent film. However, you skipped out on much of the history and although you did mention some of the west, you failed to note that the Rus that reigned over the east were of the maternal lineage. You didn't mention his paternal first son Tierghnan (Little Lord) that married an Irish Princess, thus becoming King of Brefnei Tierghnan Ruarc/Rourke/Rourke/Roark/Rook/Rork ect. this is the paternal lineage of the Rurik Keivian Rus. So you see, there is nothing semi-legendary.

Geneticists agree that The slavic Y DNA haplogroup is R1a. According to analysts the Thracians Illyrians and ancient Macedonians were in the slavic R1a DNA and according to them it most likely originated in the Balkans thousands of years ago. The hunza and kalash who live in the Pakistan region and claim to be descendants of the ancient Macedonians of Alexanders army have very high slavic R1a DNA, unlike the people around them.

As a Greek I've studied Byzantine History. Rus/Varangians/Vikings were employed as mercenaries forming the elite troop of the Varangian Guard. During the centuries they got hellenized and assimilated. Viking descedants made they way into the imperial bloodline, starting from the empress Eudocia Ingerina, daughter of Ingerin, an officer of the Varangian Guard and a Greek noblewoman from Constantinople.

Kievan Rus was indeed founded by Norseman and early rulers were of norse blood, however majority of population in country was ethnic Slavs, from farmers to soldiers, nobles and later ruling class. No denial of Norseman influence on Kievan Rus BUT keep in mind they took Slavic faith, culture, names and became heavily slavenized.

Good video, but I believe the Scandinavian impact is overemphasized. Yes, Scandinavians were there as a ruling class and skilled warriors. But the majority of Kievan Rus were Slavic, and worshiped Slavic gods like Piorun and Veles. Kievan Rus were Slavs with a Scandinvain descended ruling class.

the correct answer is that Rurik and his tribe mixed with the Slovs they came to. Over 50 year period there was no more difference and two became one knows Rus. The propaganda is that Slovs were just ruled by Vikings when in reality they mixed and formed a whole new Slov kind.

Princess Olgas revenge on the Drevlians for killing her husband was indeed brutal as well as cunningly brilliant, not just killing the most important figures but burying alive and then burning alive thousands of their people

6: 59 Sviatoslav was not a king, there are no kings in Orthodox civilization, only (grand) princes - like Sviatoslav - and tsars (like Ivan the Terrible centuries later, or Serbian or Bulgarian tsardoms.

The local Rus people? The Rus came from Roslagen in Sweden. This is information widely known and quite easy to find.
Usually I like your videos. But this was wrong.

reply

Olga sounds like a real women. Avenged her husband. Not like these 21st century thots that would probably mary the Drevlian leader and send nudes to all his soldiers.

So called Kievan Rus was not a state, but a city of Lithuania. Kievan Rus was a part of Lithuania till 1569. Duke Ingvar was Estionian, vassal of Lithuania.
reply

Hi! Norse people from what is today Sweden certainly did not only go east. As far north as Uppland, around 20% of the runestones mention travels going west!
