878: A Tour of Viking Britain Will: There is no evidence, anywhere i. e. not one shred, of an Anglo-Saxon invasion, or an invasion by any other peoples after the withdrawal of the Roman legions in 410 AD. It is therefore, distinctly possible that the Saxon / continental settlers had been in Britannia for decades prior to the final Roman withdrawal; and far from being invaders, they were refugees seeking peace and stability. Consequently, it is both possible and plausible, that the widely accepted narrative of persecuted Britannic natives being pushed ever further west, from their lands in the east, is also false. The Welsh and Cornish, far from being the persecuted natives, could have been the troublesome raiders who regularly encroached on their peaceful eastern neighbours. The abduction of Saint Patrick (born in what is, today, England) by Irish pirates suggests that the tribesmen from the west were, perhaps, not as peaceful as we have been led to believe.
I believe that the Anglo Saxons were settlers who were absorbed into late Roman Britain, and this extra manpower was actually welcomed by the Romano British to defend against the violent incursions by tribes from the west.
Good video, regardless.

An interesting study has been done in the placenames of what is now south-eastern Scotland. Surprisingly, they found that the Saxon placenames are very much confined to the main river valleys the best farms of the time and the upriver, tributary and valleys of the smaller rivers mostly retained their Brittonic names. The inference is that Saxon settlement north of the Tweed was actually a lot sparser than maps imply, despite that Lothian is to this day very fertile arable land. This might explain why they didnt succumb to Viking political / cultural control that you had existing parallel populations rubbing along uneasily, still maintaining memories of conflict. Not sunk into the comfortable complacency that left Anglo-Saxon areas to the south so vulnerable to the Norsemen.

McAlpine the back stabber. The Picts were fighting on three fronts, the Scots or scottie from Ireland, the Vikings from the North and the English or saxons. McAlpine, 's mother was said to be a Pict and unlike the Scots or Irish take your pick, it was the women that held the power amongst the Picts and back stabber McAlpine used this to his advantage. The Picts were the true ancient Britons.

This explains a great deal of my English family history. My moms English ancestors come from Yorkshire and East Anglia. My Dads ancestors who arent Danish are from also from the north of England. We now know from looking at the last names on both sides of my family and tracing them back that they are Norse names. History like this is fascinating. Thanks for this wonderful video!

Did you see shared parts of bodies. Milking woman vs. Bleeding people vs. Juvenals health problems vs. people with brain trauma. Were you the one, who demanded the Justice. Were you the one to demand? Yep, yep, we have agreed. Will they call the police. No. Will I call? Yes, I did.

It can be argued that the last Viking invasion of Britain was the Norman Conquest, as William the Conqueror & the Duchy of Normandy emerged from a treaty, in which the Duchy was given by the Franks to Rollo in the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte after warring with each. other

I'm watching this and taking notes because I'm playing the videogame Assassin's Creed Valhalla, it's really fun but I have no idea what they're doing in this game. They don't teach this history in school in my country. Now it all make sense! thank you for this video haha: )

What springs to my mind about this time period, is how theres no such thing as one hereditary royal family
The King was whoever invaded his neighbours and killed them in battle. Until he was victim to the same fate. In one evolving power struggle, invasion after invasion.

The Anglo Saxons were the original Vikings! they had gone native and weak and worse of all Christian! in the eyes of their ancestors back in Denmark, Friesland and northern Germany and were ripe for the plundering with their rich unprotected monasteries and estates.

Norsemen and Danes
Eeeehhh, the Danes was part of what was called the Norse.
Norse wasnt a nationality, but what the people of Scandinavia, (probably with the exception of the Sami, was called, so not only Norway, but Sweden and Denmark as well!

I don't like this guy's videos. He makes it confusing with his jumps through time and his borrowed graphic stills. I get he's on a budget, but maybe being more advanced with his graphics and more consistent flow of his stories might help.

This video is so good, I bookedmarked it as I didn't have time to watch it in one swoop, but just had to make sure I could find it again and continue watching later.
Never done that with a video before, that's how good it is.

Ditch the music which is really distracting. It makes your production childish, and not suitable for adults who want to learn. The music is composed and arranged in shoddy fashion. It is also monotonous and boring.

So Guthrum and Vikings destroyed 4 Kingdoms and basically Alfred fought them back from his small corner and made him kiss his foot or whatever and then baptized him and sent him back as the King of East Anglia.

I still laugh when I hear that old Margaret Thatcher affirmation that Germans were nothing but an atavistic warrior race! . evidently she was never a history scholar of her own island nation!

The Pictish stine being shown as Pict vs Viking strife is axtually some centuries earlier, and almost certainly commemorates the 685AD battle of Dun Nechtain, Picts vs Saxons.

If you ate telling a story about Britain, why do the graphics also show Ireland? Your knowledge of history seems impressive, however, your geography needs improvement.
