Entire History of Steppe Nomads & City Builders MotherNature26: I am curious about the true nature of the Mongols. I was taught essentially what is depicted in this accounting, however I recently came across a much different perspective of Genghis Khan from India. In that account, Genghis seems only to wage war when promises were broken (although brutally) and that the western depiction of him is the result of propaganda attempting to diminish his accomplishments of empire. In other words the west wants to disqualify him from consideration when comparing western accomplishments of empire via character assassination. I write accomplishment in quotes because I am of the persuasion wars not make one great. Anyway have you come across information before that may offer a more nuanced/accurate depiction of their motivations?

I read a book about the Mongols many years ago and I wish I could remember the title of. The one thing the book emphasized was that Genghis Khan was both an organizational genius and a savage murderer responsible for the death of millions of innocent people. The Mongol wars destroyed civilization in the middle east and is only now recovering. We still have the same cultural divide today between the city dwellers and the rural populations the world over, but better communication and a commitment to equality keeps the peace. But there are still dictators in this world who only want to watch it all burn!

I recently left Beijing after 13 years. Whilst there I worked part time as a hiking guide, some of which included sections of renovated sections of wall, as depicted here. As it happens you used stock footage of some of the classic tourist sections of wall near Beijing. I know every brick and every step of the wall footage shown, its like home having walked each section over 100 times and taken thousands of photos. Thanks. I feel sad at that part of my life having moved into the past but glad to move on too. China is no longer tenable for me.

I have a request for a future episode. I don't understand & maybe Y'all can help Me understand why iT seems the name Willoughby is being Stripped from British history? Almost as if John never commissioned an exploration of N. America in 1606. That Thomas Willoughby Sr. Had no province in Virginia/Elizabeth City or That there's no correlation between U. S. virgin islands and Pirates. I guess folks prefer the Disney Stories #ReleaseTheBlackBaby

Amazing story.
Make of this what you will but when watching this it came to me to remember the story of Cain and Abel. In that story, they are the sons of Adam and Eve who are said to be the first humans, and Cain kills Abel which can be seen the first murder but it can also be seen the origins of war or conflict.
What links that story to this episode is that Cain was a farmer and Abel was a herder.

Would have been interesting to see one of these barbarian nomads fight in single combat against a Spartan warrior. Barbarians might have had a higher percentage of warriors in their society but I suspect the best civilised warriors would have been superior to the best barbarians due to specialised warrior training. Spartans didn't need to spend time caring for animals.

Aloha hienz57 says yeah my goodness what vile behavior civilized men and nomads never mix well oil and water oh ha ha pun intended so oil enriched land inhabited by people who are not even using it so let's take it and use it for our own purposes sounds right to me it in the past leave it there thanks Mr Pete Kelly you go now I understand so much better

great documentary. The only nick pick I have is that the script writer equates the words civilized with non-nomadic. this is especially prevalent in areas like 39: 11, where the Germanic peoples are called uncivilized for their lack of romanization. Other than that the information presented is great

Thanks for watching folks and remember to check out Walls by David Frye, the writer of this episode. Its one of my favourite books of the last few years. Highly recommended.
Cheers all. Onwards to the next video. It will be another 3 hour+ monster on Britains early Middle Ages.

Pete, I changed my pillowcase beforehand and it is so damn good having fresh linen that smells good from the fabric softner. That's kind of random to say, but my point is, I'm in bed, in the zone, ready to enjoy your fabulous documentary.

Talent, skill, and an upmost respect for the topic at hand, you embody what others should hold dear in their informational content. Instead of virality you should hold education most dear. And you do. For that i deeply thank you.

Very well produced, your reading of the book and the images that are shown are quite well matched-up and relevant in most examples, to the text. Very good continuity. Solid content, keep up the good work please, I appreciate it.

We often feel as though our lives now are how it's always been. Looking back can really give you some perspective on that notion. Things are a lot better than we could ever realize.

Even now young man still try to prove themselves in battle, in my country it's not uncommon for young men to fight in a brawl in order to gain that pride.

You have such a great speaking voice. Proper English. So please don't spoil it with Americanisms such as airplane. It is aircraft or aeroplane!
