The Entire History of Viking Britain Plane_guy: It's upsetting to know that we (as humans, were so extremely violent and obsessed with killing so recently. I know there has been WWI and II, but this is just such proof that we were even more obsessed with constant warring not long before that. I am very interested in UFO's and to me, this just proves why no advanced civilization would want anything to do with us except to maybe 'study' us as we would study a tribe of monkeys. We're barely out of the dark ages and all our ingenuity, art included (ie; cave paintings of animals, seem to stem from warring I suspect that if that's how we got so good at technical ingenuity, then it's most likely how all the other advanced civilizations who are dropping in on us also got so good in their very distant pasts so perhaps they are curious about us. Maybe this is simply how civilizations 'progress', if you can call it that. I remember reading about how Jane Goodall thought that chimps were kinder and more civilized than humans until she witnessed the 'Gombe Chimpanzee War'. Look that one up if you want a good laugh! Nothing has changed at all -- we are all just basically evil monkeys and nothing much has changed.

This is quite good, but needs some working on. some of the explanations as to what is going on are confusing! Such as in respect the period after Guthrum is defeated, and takes on the Christian title, then you speak of minor Vikings continuing Guthrum's attacks despite his orders, or something on those lines. When I think you mean minor Viking Lords continued their attacks 'despite' Guthrum's orders? Also later, when Alfred had created defences against the Vikings, and there was another Viking invasion, you speak of some early victories, but still they held out. Which I presume you mean some early victories for the 'Vikings' but still the Saxons held out?
Also the number of times you use 'however' is rather a lot?
Would also be good to see more archaic maps of the times when explaining strategy please?

The real reason for the viking time is not clearly mentioned. It was the war against Scandinavia and northern Germany that Charlemagne started. Before that Scandinavia was trading with wide area of the world. As is the case today, trading routs must be secured by military might, which Scandinavia possessed. It was the first war Scandinavia and northern Germany had to fight against the pope, so of course religious sites was the main target i this religious war. Next time the pope started a war against our ancestors was around 1630, which it called the 30 year war. He haven't tried a new military war since then.

Peaceful traders was vastly drowned out by your violent image of paganism. These people were largely farmers and craftspeople. Paganism is not inherently violent in the northern hemisphere. Certainly greatly less so than Christianity. And less aggressive. The cultures vary though.
I see you skipped over Bebe and that he created the term Anglo Saxon, which is a cheet name like Celt. Bit of a mind game. Hope you do something on that please. yes watched you piece on the Celts.

Humans love to slaughter each other.
This magnificently crafted history documentary is nevertheless a litany of humans relentlessly savaging each other. Imagine all those souls hacked to pieces in all those battles. Countless names and individuals gone and lost. Humans are arguably a loser species.
Accordingly, we are not high up on the alien list of technology-sharing target cultures.

If history was taught like this in schools and universities, English speaking people everywhere (even in the notoriously ignorant USA) would know their own and other peoples' histories. Sigh Thanks very much for this skillful, entertaining, enlightening, visually stunning tour through a complicated and very rough patch of Britain's history. (I'm also happy to learn about Magellan TV)

Well, it was almost ok, until 12 minutes in and suddenly I'm listening to an ad from the guy for the show I'm already watching, asking for money and support. If people are listening, don't annoy them with your own version of an ad break. It is disrupting to the history, and super irritating. I'll watch a different documentary without a bunch of fundraising ads in the middle.

How could they think that The entire history of this time was only the fighting of the wars? There was a great amount of living going on at that time too; not just the fighting and dying of the men. This historical story is good to learn, but I do wish the rest would have a place in the story too. Part of my own family was in Mercia at the time of this story.

why is evryone bothered about the Anglo Saxon being taken by the Vikings Anglo Saxon did the same before the original Britons were not obsessed with war and domination which is IRONIC considering the BIRTISH EMpire only the ones that built in stone and wrote have their stories told. The ones that believe in slavery and domination and ego

Your British pride of being vikings is not real dudes! Look at DNA tests to see how much Scandinavian blood you really have. Its like 1% in most brits. u got conquered by Vikings but it was a very small force. your brits just accept it.

The Britons in what is now England and the Picts in what is now Scotland have mostly disappeared. Some Cornish people and some Welsh are genetically Britons but the English nowadays are genetically German/Dutch/Danish.

Being from West Virginia, I never really understood why Ireland, Scotland and England hated each other so much but now it all makes sense. It started over a thousand years ago

I wonder if the people who left accounts of these amazing battles ever thought it possible that people a thousand years later would read their words
