In 1804 Napoleon created 18 'Marshals of the Empire', to serve as the senior officers of the Grande Arme. He created a further 8 before his abdication. A few were aristocrats, but others were the sons of shopkeepers or tailors. The most favoured became princes and kings. Among their ranks were legendary figures such as Marshals Lannes, Soult, Davout and Massena, but also much less well know figures like Prignon, Brune and Moncey. Our series will explore the lives of all 26 Marshals, and rank them according to our own judgement of their achievements as Marshals

If anyone is interested theres a REALLY good book called Egyptomania. It mainly deals with the western worlds love affair with ancient egyptian culture but almost the entire first half deals with napoleons time in Egypt, his battles, the French archaeological enterprises in Egypt, and catalogues the influence Egypt had on Napoleon and France and the influence Napoleon/France had on Egypt.

Murat was also thought by his last name to be of middle eastern or moorish origin, he even used to boast about such a thing.
He was definetly a man of courage and appearance both though.
May i ask what verdion of the Symphony 40 you used at minute 20: 57 when you introduced him?

Saint-Cyr career after Elba was pretty adequate. No politics, a bureaucratic position and trying to save a colleague for a fair but inappropriate judgement. His resignation was a sign of the still problematic and unfortunate situation of the Bourbons.
reply

It is a myth that Murat and Lannes could not stand each other. They were actually close friends and called each other tu in their correspondence. They spent holidays together before Murat had to leave France to become king of Naples.

Oudinot in every battle: DO IT NOWW, KILL ME COME ON DO ITT
Every damn bastard who tried failed.
Death shows up one day on a close encounter COME ON MERDE YOU SON OF A GUN, DO ITT
Death postpones his visit for decades.

One cannot understate the guts Murat had in battle. His actions in Egypt alone are the stuff of legend! Storming the tent of the Ottoman general and beating him in one on one combat. Truly remarkable.
reply

If I learned 1 thing, its that Saint-Cyr could care less what you thought. It takes a lot of nerve to leave your position multiple times even after Napoleon threatened to have you shot.

Murat: Sure I ride a Tigerskin saddle wear FEATHERS and TIGHT FITTING clothes and I'm always willing to pose for a portrait. But don't me names least my Horse leave hoofprints on your ass.

Napoleon in the backseat of the car while his mum drives past McDonalds.
Mum, I want a Marshal Lannes!
Mum: We have a Victor at home.

Oudinot gets obliterated by cannon fire:
Oudinot: manifests a new body behind the cannons and cut down everyone by his sword

reply

You could make an anime series out of Napoleon and his marshals, Murat would be that super flamboyant loud and brilliant guy.
reply

Oudinot dying in bed in pain: Please doctor, put me out of my misery.
Doctor: How? Bullets and swords don't work.

reply

It seems most of Napoleon's Marshals came from humble backgrounds. Quite inspiring IMO, given it was the 18-19th century.
reply

One of two active Marshals that voted for the execution of Ney. he later regretted it. It sounds like he was a real POS.
reply

One of Napoleon's biggest mistakes, (there were many, was putting undeserving family members in positions of powers
reply

Damn, Murat like Ney are as brave as they come. Neither deserved to die after all they had accomplished for France.
reply

Oudinot got shot about 30 times yet he still lived a full, long life and died at 80 years of age. What a Chad
