Our series will explore the lives of all 26 Marshals, and rank them according to our own judgement of their achievements as Marshals Timrath: 18: 22 Macdonald was by far the most likeable of all the Marshals, but I wouldn't say that he lacked vanity. His vanity, however, was of a different kind than that of most soliders. As an intellectual, he was quite aware of his superior acumen. In his memoirs, he never missed a chance to point out how much smarter he was than everyone else. To me, this makes him even more endearing.
The fact that Napoleon sent him to Spain, must have seemed particularly distatsteful to Macdonald. After all, his ancestors emigrated from Scotland to escape English tyranny; now he was imposing tyranny on another nation. I'm sure he was painfully aware of the cruel irony.

most of the marshals who came from innkeepers or peasants are self taught in battle.
unlike the british, wellington observed and studied the battles in europe and so used against them in spain, add the stubborness of the spanish and the lack of cooperation from other marshals

I wish desaix survived so I could have see him becoming one of the top marshals or Atleast Napoleons rival Moreau.
Moreau is interesting he has its ups and downs but I could say that he is a capable commander independelty.
I'd rank his level below massena.

Duke of wellington: When massena opposed to me on the field I never slept comfortably.
Damn! Massena must be a real fighter even when he is outnumbered he still find ways on how to win battles.

reply

I have to mention that Massena won only against one core in the battle of zurich. When Suvorov came during the second battle of Zurich he was completely crushed and Massena almost got captured
reply

I love that MacDonald and Massena come one after the other. One was unexceptional, but reliable and a man of honour. The other was brilliant, but also a corrupt scoundrel.

I just came back from Paris. I was lucky enough to visit napoleon's grave at les invalides but didn't hear of the boutique napoleon until now

This really exposes that Napolean developed great generals that could serve under him, but many struggled with independent commands.

Can't believe I actually know some of the battles through Sharpe & Sharpe's rifles with Sean bean if anyone else remembers that

Honestly, I wish there'd be an HBO series about the lives of these men. Each are unique and quiet interesting in there own ways.

Hearing of Marshal messena was sad, getting shot in the face and lossing a eye isnt easy. He was a great General!

Imagine the carnage that would ensue if Dick Cheney and Napoleon Bonaparte both went hunting together.

Mcdonald and Ney are my favorites, one outspoken of the mind the other of bravery both loyal to France
