To understand the deep roots of the crisis we go right back to the creation of the canal in 1869, and the long history of British intervention in Egypt - all with the usual Epic History TV maps as well as loads of brilliant and rarely-seen archive film from the period

Nasser has a point to a certain degree. The speech about Egyptians digging the canal and what it took. What Nasser didn't take into account was, when your paid to do or sell something then the responsability for whatever it may be in this case the Suez canal, all of which had previously been paid for, the labour had been paid for. Moving the goal posts to suit your own needs is wrong and Britain and France were right to want to take it back and put it in international control, that was the deal from the start. Greedy power crazed Nasser should have his ass handed to him. I don't care that there are those who disagree. When you agree to sell, lease, whatever then the deal should be honoured or expect consiquences.

In retrospect was the US lack of support for Britain and France shortsighted? It signalled the final nail in the coffin of British influence over the Middle East, soured the relationship between France and the US and opened the door for the Middle East to fall within the Soviet sphere since the US didn't step in replace Britain in that region and so there was no one to ensure Western Governments were installed.
I've always felt like it was almost a knee-jerk action rather than something which was strategically planned by the US.

BS one sided Marxist video. Europe paid for the canal. They hired Eqyptians workers, who gladly took the much higher wages they could get from the job. Egypt sold its interest to the UK. At that point, Eqypt had no legal claim on it whatsoever. And India and Pakistan didnt magically gain their independence. The UK voluntarily gave it to them, after turning their SH countries around. The seizure of the canal was not legal! The shareholders did not agree to any buy out.

Why make a decision on something belong to someone else? I know maybe you funded the canal, I loved France n British but I think the Egyptian Dug the canal n not only that but it's thier land. for me, if I'm one of this leader of Great nation in the meeting, I had no complain nor Questioning somebody water, not land, I'll probably ask the Egyptian for favor if they can allow me pass-through thier canal, I must be loose my mind if I attacked them knowing I'm wrong.

No joke, a history course I'm taking in university is making me write a massive paper on this exact topic, and this video literally covers everything I need to write about. I've been a patron of your guys for more than two years, and this isn't the first time you've given me an extremely in-depth analysis of a topic I've needed to talk about in school. Keep up the great work guys

Judging from this video, it looks as though Nasser had a point. The Suez Canal was built with Egyptian labor. Many laborers died (presumably because of poor working conditions. Nasser was not saying that British or French ships couldn't go through. He was just saying that, from then on, Egypt would manage the passage-way. (Egypt did pay for it with their blood)

Very well explained! Exceptional work! Well done!
However Sri Lanka was not part of British India. It was a colony governed separately under the British Empire as British Ceylon. Ceylon (today Sri Lanka) became an independent sovereign nation-state in 1948 soon after India and Pakistan.

Nasser WAS a dictator, you lying fools. He helped seize power in a coup, then banned all other parties before being elected. Before his 2nd term, he banned all his opponents within his own party from running against him, creating another sham election. He was a Marxist, jew-hating racist.

The USA needed to STFU and mind their own business! Great Britain was entirely in the right on this issue! Had the great Lady Thatcher been in power she and Regan would have worked it all out as they did the Falklands!

Egypt: Egyptians will run the Egyptian Canal
US and Britain: Surprised pikachu face
And then Eisenhower wondered why they didnt want to be his ally. Cuz you're an opportunistic a hole, thats why.

It is really Nasser was a great political manipulator in his time. Despite his primitive Country, he succeeded to have many vital steps toward improve Egypt. He never stop astonishing me.

The West used its brain power and money to help build the canal. Do they get any credit? I bet there were not any Egyptian engineers or financiers around for this project.
reply

Boy that was some spin they used back then. Egypt wasnt threatening to shut down traffic through the canal. This is really interesting so far. On to part 2

Its so nice to hear Great Britain described as a fading colonial power.
The current British leadership still thinks the Empire is still there.

reply

Surprised I never heard of this event! Sadly enough it seems to me to be the starting point of all the major middle eastern issues even to today.

They say blood is thicker than water, and if the countless wars in the Middle East have told us one thing, it is that oil is thicker than blood.

Important point: Buy out the share holders at a reasonable price. So the investors, who financed it's construction, weren't ripped off.
