Belisarius: Conquest of the Vandals (2/6) lmao: Honestly, the Roman era, doesn't matter if we are looking at the Republic, the Empire, East or West. but people were so delusional and power hungry, that they would legit watch their whole world and family burn just so they can overcome a formidable political and army opponent, with close to 0 chance that they can take up that position themselves and continue their prosperous carrier. It is so mind blowing that behind every huge and well known downfall of the Roman history there are jealous opponents without skills and talents.

3: 29 doesn't go into exact detail, but one of the reasons for the coup was the previous King had lost a massive battle against the Moors, making many people question his leadership. The Moors, knowing that they would be beaten on flat terrain, set themselves up on top of a mountain, formed a phalanx-like position, and rained javelins down on the Vandalic horseman. The Vandal army comprised of a majority Caverly they couldn't do much to stop the shower of javelins leading to many men dying in their retreat. And eventually, the dethroning of the King himself.

That Justinian got as close as he did to restoring Rome in the West was no coincidence. The Eastern Empire was strong enough to do it absent the plague. Rome was on its way back up again until then. They just didn't get enough of a break from the plague, the Persians, and then the Arabs. Things only got really bad once Egypt and Syria were lost.

The history of the Vandalic wars is a great read. It has a more in-depth look into the events leading up to how the Vandals settled in Africa and why Roman soldiers feared sea battles against the Vandals also has amazing quotes. Also, awesome details about the struggles faced with leadership and the campaign itself. Money well spent, no regrets.

How did the hun take to all the God will decide the winner of war and paying for supplies while acting with good behavior? Were they becoming Christian or were they kept in the fields and their supplies sourced by Roman's? Or was their reputation misjudged?

The coolest little bit here is the Huns part at ad decimum. They encounter a larger force that has only heard of them, they send out their lone rider as custom, the vandals realize its the Huns, and just run away.

These numbers can't be right. Imagine charging with a horse and then deciding ah my friends are dying but I'll just run away. twice. Common sense would say send your entire army if the coasts clear and crush them.

I love how Belisarius gives that order after hanging the two murderers and says good behavior will see God on their side.
Next big event? Vandals have no clue he's coming and don't oppose his landing.

Belisarius was a genious! OMG! The more i read and find out about him, the more i admire him! by the way. Gelimer was a donkey! he could stop romans at least twice and he waisted time doing nothing.

Awesome video, possibly one of the best Epic history has created. The narrator deserves recognition too! Love to see more videos on eastern Roman generals and politics. 10th century especially.

Belesarius is an underrated roman general. But his military brilliance rivals that of Ceasar or Napoleon. I hope someone makes a great movie about him so that the general public may know him.
reply

what was the differance between vandals and romans? was it a war of religion. cesar incorporated neighbours as fullborn citicens, vandals was neighbours who addopted roman way of life.

It is amazing how closely the sci-fi series The General (Sm Stirling and David Drake) follows the history of Belisarius. (Not surprising as Drake is a massive Belisarius fan)
reply

The fact that Belisarius departed a relatively unstable Constantinople and returned having added Corsica, Sardinia and North Africa to the Byzantine rule!
Cheers from Egypt!

These are just unbelievably, well-done videos. Im in awe of the craft that goes into them. So top notch. Easily one of the easiest decisions to become a supporter.

Gelimer might be cunning but he was very passive in battle, also the vandals troops, the hell is wrong with them, they keep getting routed by very few romans soldier.

Less then 5 years after his death, a particular bedouin was born in Arabia. He fired up his people whose armies swept from Spain to Pakistan n Caucases to the Sudan.
