GRUELING FIGHT for Control of Guadalcanal - Biggest Battles of WWII Viper: The Battle of Midway ended the lives of about 80 of the best Navy fighter pilots the Japanese had. By the time of Guadalcanal the US Navy F4F pilots had already learned how to handle the A6M Zero. The A6M controls froze up at 300 mph, when the F4F was just getting warmed up. As long as the Wildcats kept their airspeed up they would come out on top. The F4F had much superior high altitude performance than the Zero. If the Wildcats were caught in a jam they'd go into the infamous 'Thatch Weave', a maneuver the Japanese had great difficulty countering. The Cactus Air Force maintained a 2 to 1 kill-to-loss advantage over the Zero at Guadalcanal.

Guadalcanal was a horrendous slugfest across the board. The U. S. lost about 7, 500 sailors and marines, 1, 500 marines and 5, 500 sailors. The naval battles were absolute knockdown dragout surface battles. U. S. pilots did quite well flying the outclassed F4F, with the F6F still a year from being deployed in the Pacific.

The video didn't mention the Japanese pilots greatest flaw/weakness in this campaign, the fatigue from long distance flight from Rabaul to Guadalcanal which is more than double range of what the Luftwaffe pilots experienced during the Battle of Britain.

Actually the Zero's speed with 20mm cannons is like a battle axe in the hands of a 6ft tall German warrior.
The Wildcat is like a Roman Legionnaire clad in armor and wielding a scutum, but armed with a short gladius.

Excellent history. Those American boys who died didn't die in vain. They were all dealing with devils living in the skins of men.

This was such an important battle for Australia. I think if the US didn-t take Guadal Canal, we-d be speaking japstralian

I Once Heard That If Capt. Joe Foss Had a F4U-A1 Corsair in Fall of 1942. He Would Got 44 Air Victories.

The Imperial Japanese Army Ace, Saburo Sakai was impressed about how much punishment the F4F could take.
