Hi! My name is Kathy and I love Physics and the strange, crazy, hidden stories behind all of our electronics and electrical theories. These stories are historically and scientifically accurate but also funny and quirky as hell. Enjoy!

Just a comment on the doctors at Gilberts time who used bleeding and poisons to treat people. It turns out that placing leeches on and around an infected wound caused the leeches to draw out the infection. Then, with cupping/bleeding, it could also reduce infection by removing infected blood. The patients body would then produce new blood that was uninfected and had a fresh supply of white cells ready to work. But it had to be done carefully, and only for a few types of disease. The problem arose when practitioners used cupping indiscriminately. As for using doses of poison to cure illnesses, that is EXACTLY what modern pharmacology does! Most prescription medications are very toxic unless used very carefully at safer, tested doses. And there can still be problematic side-effects. Even some over-the-counter medicines are very toxic unless used at low doses, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, which can cause death. And look at chemotherapy for cancer! Its poison that causes open sores, devastating nausea, and hair loss!
In sum, those practitioners in Gilberts day werent as primitive as theyre often depicted although, to be fair, a lot of them were the scorn-worthy clowns Gilbert deplored.

I always found it an interesting coincidence that el means god, elohim being the plural. And if you look at most English words that begin with this prefix, it usually has something to do with power in some way. To elect is to give power, to elevate is to lift up requiring power to elucidate to give power through the clarity of knowledge.
Also, I am not so quick to dismiss a myth as simply a marketing tool. As you said amber came from the fossilized remains of tree sap. There is evidence that lightning strikes could instantly fossilize a tree. I am also of the opinion that many of these early myths recounting the thunderbolts of the gods were actually accounts of a catastrophic period of earths recent history circa the end of the Younger Dryas. While removing a tree after it had been struck by lightning, amber may have been found and if it happened more than once, well, there has to be an explanation that involves the god or power of lightning. These stories began as oral accounts that later would be romanticized by civilizied Greece.
Thanks

The Discovery and Development of Electromagnetic Force
Have you ever pondered how our intimate understanding of electricity progressed from its beginning throughout the ages? What was the first clue that revealed itself to an inquisitive intellect with the power, insight, and perseverance to discover its profound truth and enlighten us all? Nature does provide occasional natural flashes under the kimono of quantum physics e. g. magnetism, static electricity, rainbow prism, .
During this time of isolation and sub-seventy sun spot numbers, you will find this meticulously researched, factual journey up the road of electromagnetic discovery and development an opportunity for enlightening and entertaining diversion. It's written for all ages, and the presenter keeps it interesting and moving right along with numerous illustrations and visual examples. I had no inkling of the breadth of the cast of characters involved and their social antics unexpected behavior.

Love it! The ancient Greeks also first discovered pyroelectricity of crystals. The effect that produces a voltage potential across a crystal proportional to rate of change in temperature. To my knowledge they discovered them from throwing crystals into a fire and they would spark off.
Miniature particle accelerators are made by using pyroelectric crystal discs that have a pointed conductor out of the center. Dropping the crystal in liquid nitrogen, helium, etc bath causes a MASSIVE voltage potential spike at the pointed conductor and rifles charged particles off.

2: 06 Although this story doesn't end well. it does end well for the salesmen, who could then increase the price of amber. as it was a piece of the gods. And this summarizes the pointless entries of all religious text. Those who wrote the book, did it for their own gain. The Jewish god says: don't eat pork and only obey this text and your god is a king. Hmmm. I wonder it the people who wrote the book were selfish kings who's enemies sold pork.
I think you're right that mythology can be recognized as market control. IMO

My understanding is that amber is not fossilized in the same way that most fossils are formed, as fossilization is a process that usually replaces the original structure with minerals. Amber is just very very very old sap, that has been changed by time and pressure, but fundamentally is still sap. My father used amber to french polish a violin. I remember that it took a long time to dissolve. Over a year if I remember correctly. Made a very nice, but expensive, finish. Like liquid honey over the surface.

Hi Kathy! After watching a dozen or so of your more recent videos I have decided to start from the beginning to see all of your insights chronologically. As an engineer, myself, I have often thirsted for the behind the scenes history of the (otherwise magical) units I've used every day of my career. I have a few favorite books that give glimpses--too short insights--into the people who made our professions. You have done an excellent job. Thank you Megas!

Dear Kathy, Excellent and thanks for all of your great and very inspirational creations of all these marvelous videos on physics. You lead us to re-see and re-think about how physically based come here. Through your ingeneous work, we can rethink and reflect on this long road. We can find a way for a better and sustainable future, as our previous mentors had been wornderfully and remarkaly showed us.

Thales was a scientist in the astronomical/meterological department, there is a famous story of him getting sick of being mocked for his impractical speculations and relative poverty, so he used his knowledge to predict a bumper olive crop and went about leasing all the olive pressing floors for the harvest season. He made an absolute killing re-hiring the pressing floors out for a big profit.

Dear Kathy, why did it take so long time before serious investigations startet? Was it religious pressure or economy or lack of government support or lack of communication or did people keep their findings secret ( like Newton and other mathematicians), in China there were similar lulls that were caused by lack of support and negative support from the emperor.

From the stories, it seems Thales was more of a businessman and well-connected with kings. It's quite possible that he learned his things (like predicting solar eclipse) from his business travel to Egypt and was a renaissance man in his own right. So his philosophy I think was rather his hobby. But I doubt enough is known to prove or disprove my hypothesis.

A fun video. I didn't quite get the full connection between amber and electricity, but that doesn't make too much difference. The basic story comes through. And let me venture that the revolution in discovery was really more about a revolution in human communications and the corresponding sharing of information and ideas. Thanks!

Oh my, science and technology lessons with some humor and flair. How much better can it get! When I was studying electronics in the late 60s the instructors were at their best when they told anecdotal stories about the scientists who made the discoveries. Your videos take me back to those days, thank you.

Hi Kathy. Thks for your informative u tubes. I strated watching you after i saw a Vertasium u tube on electricity. At that point i thought that i fully understood electricity. But then o started seeing u tubes crticising the veritasium utube. Any chance you can do something clarifying the veritasium video?

I did some research on Thales and its a wealth of information abt him on Wikipedia hes a well known mathematician astronomer and philosopher hes considered the father of science so I beg to differ with ur minimizing of his impact and accomplishments but thkful bcuz I learned abt him from your video
reply

Was Thales a philosopher or a scientist? Back then, the study of the natural world was part of philosophy, so he was a scientist, too. We see this even today in the Ph. D degree, or Doctor of Philosophy, even though few Ph. D's have anything to do with philosophy as we know it.
reply

Thales was definitely a scientist. He was a recognized astronomer and mathematician who wrote treatises on eclipses and the location of stars. He was one of the Seven Sages of Ancient Greece, and one of the first to argue against superstition in ones search for truth.

I have watched this video for twelve seconds and already I think your videos are awesome. No other videos on the history of electricity I have seen have involved gods and sheep and death by lightning bolt and women who turn into trees and I'll stop now.
reply

i did not notice OR CARE when looking at this guys picture whether he was ugly or good looking. But, now that u have basically MADE ME notice this I am going to JUDGE YOU by the same yardstick!
reply

I have realized that I accidentally said that Thales lived over 1600 years ago when he really lived over 2600 years ago (technically true but. Anyway, I will fix it and repost it - sorry
