Remastered versions of some of the first videos captured in Copenhagen, Denmark. The original recordings are from different sources and were captured between 1900 and 1910. We observe: Retail and business in Copenhagen: Serpent Cykelforretning on Falkoner Alle. The newly built Hotel Cosmopolite on the corner of Store Kongensgade/Gothersgade. The retail bank at Nygade 4. Knippelsbro. Hotel d'Angleterre. Bikubens Sparekasse -sterbro branch. -sterbros Vinhandel. Hafnia Bicycles. Ferdinand L-rups Isenkram & Udstyr. Jens Karl Jensen's men's clothing store Cravats. Cyclists ride back and forth in front of the Serpent bicycle shop at the intersection of Falkoner Alle 25 in Frederiksberg. Decorated floats travel through the streets of Copenhagen to raise money for the Children's Office. A large and festive procession moves through Str-get. The first Children's Aid Day took place on May 6, 1904. The aim was to raise money for humanitarian work among children and young people. It was a popular event, with many of the artists of the day taking part. Further, we are on a boat traveling along Copenhagen's canals which is an excellent way to see more of the city's sights

This film must have been made before 1908, because -Detailhandlerbanken- (2: 02) went bankrupt, February 1908 after the bank had invested in projects of speculation. I wonder, why our national flag - -Dannebrog- - in this little film, is blue with a white cross and not - as it should be - RED with a white cross. If you cannot make the right colours, it would be much better with the - oriigiinal - monochrome version. At the end of this film, the ruins of the second Christiansborg Castle (which was completely destroyed by fire in 1884) is seen. The present - third - castle was finished in 1928.

I've always been told that -oh, Danes were so poor in the old times, everyone was starving and working themselves to death, had tuberculosis and blah, blah, blah-.
But every time I look at these videos of the old times, everything looks actually very nice! No one living on the streets, no stress, decent clothing, relaxed environment, etc. I'm sure there existed poor people that time, but not like I have been told all my life. I'm really sick and tired of all the false narratives that I have been filled with all my life.

Very interesting, but the coloring should have been done with more care: All these blue flags with a white cross should actually be red with a white cross - the Danish national flag! This actually makes me notice that there is a funny absence of red in the whole movie! Is that maybe a more common technical problem when coloring old black and white films?
reply

Thank you so much for the fantastic re-work of these old films. It give a complete different impression of the time compared to the black and white original. And the sounds are really bringing life to the scenery. One litle detail about Denmark for your kind information. Danish steam locos never had a two tone whistle: -)

i love these. only critice is that the coloring is off. like the flags (danebrog) are bright blood red with a white cross. here they come off black or dark brown with beige cross. things that would have been bluegreen of copper arent. its very brown on brown with a bit of green. its a small thing.
reply

Interesting video for sure. There are many flags in the video, for instance at 5: 59, and they would all most for certain be red and white. Danes love their flag -Dannebrog-. Displays the limitations and shortcomings of the current digital colorization techniques.

The color and sound fakery detracts from the pictures. One surely has enough fantasy to imagine that there were colors and sounds in 1910 too. Smoothening of the movements and getting rid of the worst noise is okay though. How about posting the originals at least?
reply

I apologize if this has already been asked, but what causes the jerky movement of vertical lines (like posts, towers, etc) from left to right? Is this an artificate of the film to video conversion process? It is only noticeable in a few of the film clips.

Amazing. 11: 18 you see the Christiansborg Castle still is a ruin after the last fire in 1884, before it was rebuilt.
02: 33 Love the scene where a man falls with his bike and another man from the store rushes out and picks it up.

Everybody was wearing a hat or a cap or a bonnet. even the very young children had headgear.
What a difference a century makes.
P. S. The woman running down the steps at 2: 04 disappeared from history like a puff of smoke.

reply

Creepy that literally ever single person seen in this footage is now 6 feet under.
Also, not too sure how I feel about the fake audio track. I'd have to see it audio-less to decide.

As a Dane I Don't like that the overvelming use of the blue colour. It hurts me to see our flag being blus and white. It should be red and white - not very respectful to our flag
reply

It is political incorrect film
Where are blacks, where are Asians, where are Muslims
?
Is it possible that Europeans could cope in Europe without all them
?

reply

Many thanks! The boats and the harbor scene remind me of _The Riddle of the Sands_ published about that time and on a sailboat along the German coast not far away.
reply

Gotta love the -black and white- Danish flags (5: 25 - 6: 00) I guess the poster has no idea what a Danish flag looks like (hint: it's RED and white)
reply

Thankyou so much, my grandparents time was then the best years of thier lives. Although my grandad was in the army he married my nan in 1915.
reply

I don't like the noises. Firstly because it is not authentic and secondly because it is obviously an English language (American English.

Imagine being able to mentally time travel to these places, and be able to report on what has happened throughout history on this planet.
reply

Great! But - as a Dane - I am not satisfied with the colorization of the Danish Flag. It's red and white - not purple and white.
reply

Only black clothes, it looks like a premonition for the terrible future that Europe would be living in the following decades.
reply

Strange that all these people are gone now. shops are gone, boats are gone, many buildings are gone to. Soon we are gone as well.
reply

This is impressive. I just wonder how much better this will be in the near future with AI being added to the mix.
reply

Native of Copenhagen here. Watching this i feel like everything has changed and nothing changed at the same time.
reply

Doesn't look much different from today. Biggest difference are the clothes, horses and the many boats in the harbour.
reply

Sometimes the camera seems to be more interesting than the ongoing event: D These videos are treasures, thank you.
reply

Great footage. I wish those who colored this would've taken their time to get the color of the flags right.
reply

Its crazy to think even young boys dressed great and were clean no overweight in sights. And here we are now.
reply

Why all the blue flags e. g. 08: 20? Or is it some color problems? It must be red flags or am I mistaken?
reply

i live in Copenhagen and its so cool seeing this old fottege as i so often drive thise places on my bike.
reply

Thx for the show and vid. I'd love if the flag had been Red And White, not Blue and White. Small detaile
reply

Disgustingly white as my heroine Emma Thompson says. It really needed some advanced negrification back then!
reply

Nicely done. The danish flag is red with a white cross though. It became a very dark blue in these clips.
