Their occupation of western Thrace and eastern Macedonia was the worst between them and Italy and Germany for Greece, they forced Greek citizens to change their surnames to Bulgarian ones forbid Greek language at schools and refuse to give food crops to rest of Greece leading to the starvation of 1942, plus the execution of many civilians. They didnt fight a single day and they wanted full annexation of greek and Serbian territories, they are lucky that didn't lose from their own land

In 1943 tsar Boris III visited Germany. Soon after his return, he misteriously died. His 6 year old son was declared tsar uder the regnal name Simeon II. Although he was deposed in 1946 by the communists, he returned after the Cold War and served as prime minister between 2001 and 2005.
Currently he is the last surviving head of state of a country which participated in World War II.

Say what you like about Boris, but he did alright by the Jews. He might have stripped them of their rights and forced them into what was essentially indentured servitude camps, but he knew it was either that or the Nazi's would invade and force them into death camps. He did what he could to keep the Jews out of Nazi hands.

Video idea: How did Bulgaria manage to gain territory after WW2?
Side note: I think things DID end pretty badly for Bulgaria, even if its the only axis power that gained land. Being occupied by the Soviets, and having their monarchy exiled and all that.

You forgot to mention that Bulgaria had one of the largest and most powerful militaries in all of Europe despite our small size. This is why Bulgaria was valuable to N Germany. I think we had the 4th largest military in the world at that point.

I am proud of Bulgaria for not having anti-Jewish sentiment in the war. And it did seem like they were bullied by the Nazis to join the Axis Alliance. I don't even think a single Bulgarian national was tried at Nuremburg anyway.

As a Bulgarian, I'm shocked to discover a video that not only focuses on Bulgaria, but is actually accurate and fairly comprehensive!
Even my school history classes didnt present these events so clearly!

Bulgaria was the only member of the Axis that didn't participate in any axis war expedition and didn't comit any war crime.
Greeks of Macedonia and Thrace that Germany gave to Bulgaria: weeeell no.

Bulgaria won the first balkan war and no one was too much mad at them. Well Turkey, but who cares. They should have chill after that, that was their golden moment. But than they were unable to keep it.

Erste, Zweite and Drei is wrong. It's Erstens, Zweitens and Drittens in this case.
If you use the german language for that. If you use another then ignore this comment.

Bulgaria has an odd history. For example it's on the central/axis powers side but before being invaded by allied powers, it surrenders to them insteads of fights.

Yugoslavia was not just because the government went pro axis and flipped to pro allies. And fearing allowing the allies in it was seen necessary to take it down

Do you ever notice how most of the lesser Axis powers just didn't really have a choice?
It was either be invaded by Nazis or be invaded by Soviets

2: 39 another reason is simple. The Germans didn't trust Bulgarians for having a Slavic and (at the time perceived) Turkic race mix origins.
