How did Ethiopia survive the Scramble for Africa? Documentary Shawn: One reason why Ethiopia defeated Italy was that Menelik was trying to convince the Italians that Ethiopians were savages with spears while secrety he was building up an arsenal of cannons and guns. When the Italians invaded they underestimated just how strong the Ethiopians would be and being defeated by what people considered to be less than human was very damaging for Italian prestige. This is one of the reasons why Italians were the but of jokes. This victory is also why the Ethiopians started to be called Caucasians by Western nations and it's why Menelik considered him and his people to be white lol

I love how much historicity and dope/snarky illustrations you all work in. Incredibly well spoken narration, with some modern slang thrown in.
I love it. I was raised with a classical education myself. Yet one must know, and grow with culture and language itself. We are just one living part, the micro, a part of the macro.
It is beautifully mirrored in all things.
Thank you for your short animated documentaries!
So
Video idea, why does the House of Windsor, ie Saxe-Coburg-Gotha
No longer have a claim upon/ or claim their ancestral territorial lands?

Bonus
How Liberia Survived the Scramble for Africa
Liberia and Ethiopia were the only countries that survived the struggle to take over Africa, but how did Liberia survive? Well, first of all, Liberia was set up by the United States for African-Americans to return to Africa after the Civil War. The European powers thought if they took Liberia, it would most likely enrage the United States, which would lead to a brutal war. In the end, Liberia survived the Scramble for Africa.

So now I know where the Ferengi got their Nagus. Not exactly the best use of the title, if you ask me, Star Trek. Ferengi itself is much better, because there we're only making fun of ourselves. (It comes from farang, an Arabic word for the Franks which came to be applied to everyone of European descent)
Making fun of yourself is cool. Making fun of others is not.

reply

Good summary. However, I wish you included a really important detail: religion. The European royals respected Ethiopia as an older and equally-legitimate Christian empire. They couldn't justify invasion or enslavement in the same way they did for the rest of Africa.
reply

Even if Mussolini did occupy Ethiopia, he was doomed from the start as he was completely surrounded, much like his attempts to take Greece (but in that case, Germany and Bulgaria stepped in.
reply

Why is the so-called scramble for Africa not considered WW1? Because it's Africa? Because the people who were attacked by every western European country in the world were Black?
reply

Big Mistake!
Theodore II and his predecessors were Gondarian. His succussor, Yohannes VI, was from Tigray; and Menelik II was from Shoan. And all his succussors were also Shoans.

The case of Ethiopia remaining independent has always been inspiring to me. Out of all the imperial bastards carving up Africa, one nation certainly wasn't gonna stand for it.
reply

Fun Fact: In battle of adva There were just 15000 Italian who fought 120K+ Ethiopians
And the Ethiopians still celebrate that victory as a public holiday lol

reply

One thing I feel important to mention is that until their annexation by Mussolini the practice of slavery was still legal in Ethiopia.
Which was um. a thing

reply

Let me tell you something about Ethiopian culture. the people will love and care for you but also know they have that same love and care for their beloved country
reply

This is especially interesting when you consider how in the 21 century New Scramble for Africa, Ethiopia like many others is now a colony of China colonizers!
reply

The Battle of Adwa so shocked Europe and humiliated and embarrassed Italy that its one of the main thing the fashies ran on as they seeked power
reply

Wait, by why did the other colonial powers ally with them?
I got the too expensive to occupy - part, but besides that, why would they care?

reply

Liberia suffered a worse fate under American rule and influence. Ethiopia is the only country that truly survived the scramble for Africa.
reply

Ethiopian King: What did you call me?
Diplomat: I am so sorry, I thought it is your title
Ethiopian King: It is Negus, idiot!

reply

So many facts were wrong in this one I'm afraid. First of it's Theodrose II not Thedore II and he was king of Gondar not Shewa.
reply

Actually Ethiopia was still independent even after Italy's Invasion. Ethiopia just was in tiny land areas to fight Italians there.
reply

Italy: You are my colony now
Ethiopia: no
Italy: I SAID YOU ARE.
Ethiopia: AND I SAID NO
Mussolini: AND I SAY YES
