Why did Britain Handover Hong Kong to China? Documentary AdamESD: The name calling part is real, at least from the Chinese side. I was living in HK in the 1980s during those negotiations. As you can imagine, this was news item #1 on TV at the time.
At one point in one of their meetings, Thatcher asked Deng How do we know you will keep your word? Insulted, he answered to the interpreter Tell that fat cow that when the Chinese give their word they keep it. The British governor of HK, who could speak Chinese, was sitting there and damned near had a stroke. Thatcher looked at him in surprise because the interpreter had left out the fat cow part. She could tell something had obviously happened but she didnt know what. They played that part a hundred times on the news.

When Dengxiao Ping told Thachter he could invade at anytime she answered claim: Yes, but can you afford to keep it? She made it clear that such action would be the start of full scale war were UKs mightiest sword not just the nuclear weapons would be but it's international importance in trade. Being the EEC and NATO UK would use it's full power their to make a total embargo on Beijing - no trade with Europe and USA and UK would make totally clear on countries Saudi Arabia that they have to decide if the want trade with UK, Europe and USA or Beijing.

I was living in Hong Kong when it was announced that the UK would hand the entirety of HK back in 1997. Many people thought Thatcher had betrayed HK but the truth is that Kowloon and the Island could not survive without the New Territories, they were so intergrated. Boundary Street, the border between Kowloon and the NT was not much of a boundary, the line the road followed ran through the old Kai Tak airport. As China was adamant that they have the NT returned there was no point for the UK to keep the rest.

Oh man, you keep insisting with the silly notion that The British Empire just rolled over and you keep tickling my ribs. As I have mentioned on many of you propaganda videos that also suggest that America is a country in its own right and that they are called Americans. Fun fact, no! Every country on this planet is owned and controlled by Earths rightful owners, Britain. We built the world and you will all bow down and do as we tell you, for we are the kings of earth. Now shut up and make me a sandwich.

If UK would have just set demolition charges controlled wirelessly throughout the island of Hong Kong they would have been in a great negotiating position. They could tell the Chinese in the early to mid 80s we're not giving it back if you invade all you're going to get is an empty Island of rubble. When we took over the island it was nothing and nothing is what you will get back. Now go on and invade if you dare. Watch your economy be crippled and you barely have an economy anyway.

When Baron Patten of Barnes left, he told Hong Kong people to fight for democracy. But back then, when Hong Kong was under UK jurisdiction, did the hong kong people have the right to choose their governor? No, it was the UK people and their queen to decide who the next HK governor was, not the hong kong people. So what democracy? Pretty hypocritical of the British part. Uk people should learn their place and not interfere with other countries affairs

Worst Decision ever to leave Britain shouldve kept it, now they are ignoring the hand over treaty, building sandcastles in the sea ignoring the small thing that that land and sea isnt theirs to begin with. If they could defend a useless rock off Argentina they could have stopped in Hong Kong, we may not be Americans that pushed the button but we will defend ourselves
reply

British empire probably won't end until they return Gibraltar, Falklands and Northern Ireland
They simply lost Hong Kong because, unlike Spain, Argentina and Ireland, China had an amazing second half of XX century and became too strong to be bullied by the english army

I think he left out a few very important key facts. That Hong Kong's government was part of the negotiations! There was even a vote (a public vote) to go back together or stay part of the UK. And it is in that vote that Hong-Kongers sealed their fate.

A better question would be why didn't the United Kingdom hand over Hong Kong to the 'Republic of China/ ROC' instead of the 'Peoples Republic of China/ PRC', given that the UK agreement was with Imperial China which was superseded by the ROC not the PRC?
reply

Well Hong Kong is a hen makes gold eggs. However the CCP killed it after handin over. The British spent all efforts into Hong Kong by giving all businesses opportunities and rights, the CCP has destroying it afterwards from 1997. The game is over.

Britain should have moved nukes into Hong Kong and kept 100, 000 army men there. It would have easily become the Israel of the Far East Asia, keeping the region in eternal conflict and weak and provide easy grounds for foreign intervention.
reply

We could've held onto it. We beat Argentina half a world away. We beat Japan half a world away. Thatcher gave it up because of the expense of keeping it. China wouldn't have invaded just as they will never invade Taiwan.

I had the happy times of living and working in Hong Kong whilst building the new airport and the distant impression I got was than Hong Kongers were neither British or Chinese
reply

Hong Kong was a prestigious, modern and beautiful city when the rest of China were still eating a bowl of rice a day and riding around on bicycles on dirt roads.
reply

There is always a choice, for one give Hong Konger a voice for their own future.
Rather than decided by people who never born & lived in Hong Kong.

Cant believe I havent seen a single comment pointing out that the PRC emblem on the podium at 3: 04 is replaced with the Black Mesa logo in red and gold
reply

3: 00 But in the end instead of 50 years, were only 22 years ended in 2019 when China invaded Hong Kong and abolish the local democracy and human rights!
reply

he remarked that he could simply invade hong kong and there was nothing she could do about it you realise you talking to Margret thatcher right?
reply

Apparently that 50 years part, was computed on a calculator that was made in China. It only lasted 22 years before China steamrolled it.
