Why wasn't France carved up after Napoleon was defeated? Documentary

Napoleon embarrassed everyone. Lost. Nobody took territory from France afterwards. But why not? Jason: How is Napoleon any different than the monarchs of the era. All these people are supposedly heroes for defeating Napoleon. Look at what their countries are responsible for and ask yourself are they heros. Or did they just want to be the only bullies on the block.

Actually, this is a pattern that has been used before and I am assuming since. When the British lost the Battle of Yorktown to the American and French armies, they finally decided to grant independence to the new United States. The negotiations dragged on. The reason was France, which was an ally of America wanted to limit the power of the new country. The British on the other hand wanted America, as an English-speaking people, to be a strong counterpoint to the power of France and envisioned it as an eventual trading partner. American negotiators found themselves in the position that their former ally was trying to screw America and their enemy, England wanted to be very generous. The American negotiators, which I believe were Franklin, Adams and Jay turned around and began secret negotiations with the British. The British were very accommodating: You want everything from the Atlantic seaboard to the Mississippi River - Sure you got it. You want everything from Spanish Florida north to Isle Royale in northern Lake Superior - Sure you got it. You want all of Canada - No, I don't think so but thanks for asking! It's a bit too much. Sorry. When the Americans told France that the war was ended and they go more than they ever hoped for, France was not a happy camper!

I think a reason is that Western diplomacy during this time wasnt so absolutist and uncompromising as it is in the modern era, even against an enemy like Napoleon. Our diplomacy today is based off ideology more that reason and that leads to geopolitical disasters like the post WW1 and post WW2 treaties that carve up nations, humiliate them, and displace people. It gets worse then the victors are bitter winners like the Entente and Allies. Back in the 19th century, a victorious power still treated their adversaries with respect. The winners of modern conflicts have no such honor.

2: 18 Well this is just wrong the way it is presented.
First of all, Switzerland already had the Vaud connecting it to Geneva - it was conquered by Berne.
Jura wasn't to connect Switzerland to Geneva - to be that, it is at the completely wrong spot.
And the Valtellina - well, Switzerland was offered it, but declined.
Similar story for Savoy - Switzerland was granted the right to occupy it in case France went to war with Italy. France did go to war with Italy, but Switzerland ignored its right there.

Because we had the greatest diplomat ever: Talleyrand.
The man was shrewdd enough to instigate disbelief between the european coalition, convincing each country that they needed a France strong enough to not let THEIR ennemies become too strong.
He used divide and conquer to the fullest and kept France's border as much as possible.

I'd love you to make a video on the Stalin Note. Could it have ended the Cold War in 1952? My guess is but fun fact - no. Still, I expect, you'd find lots of interesting contradictions and absurdities surrounding the issue.

Rijssel, duinkerken. whole areas of North France spoke Dutch until Louis XIV annexed it, so the Netherlands should have taken it after Napoleon's defeat. Or earlier so belgium would never get it linguistical troubles
reply

Why would France needs to be punished? France didn't start what you brits call napoleonic wars. The european coalition, funded by the brits, started most of these wars. Why is Napoleon to be blamed?
reply

The real reason: Because france is surrounded by mountains and any gain of territory would be impossible to keep and costly for that country's military power at that time.
The end.

reply

Because other than france most countries were civilized.
France was the biggest reason WW1 ended so shitty the treaty of versailles was made which let to WW2.

James Bisonette. By God, who is this guy! He's supporting every video, every time being the first and strongest contributor, it seems.
May he be praised.

Hey man, do you ever have any sources for your videos? Because you probably should if you are claiming that this is an 'animated documentary'
reply

Spain fought a lot against Napoleon, but why they didnt receive nothing, and no one supports them in the war they were living in America
reply

So THAT'S why Switzerland is neutral: since nobody wanted to help them they just said f you all and didn't do anything ever again.
reply

Punish France. And 100 years, later it, s Germany, s turn to be punished. twian was right. history doesn't repeat but often rhymes
reply

Weird, Switzerland wanted Catholic parts of France, but after WW1 they wouldn't accept Austrian Vorarlberg joining voluntarily.
reply

Can you do a video on how Egypt and Ethiopia converted to Christianity?
I don't think these topics get much attention

reply
