Why didn't Jamaica join Canada?

Why didn't Jamaica join Canada?

Jamaica (and much of the Caribbean) were offered numerous chances to join Canada. As you'll know, none of them did. So why not? Why did Jamaica turn down the opportunity to be a Canadian Province? It's because they were sick of other people telling them what to do

I don t think this is a very accurate or responsible video. These ideas were never put forward in any serious way. You will see zero mention of any of these supposed proposals in any Canadian history book because they were extremely, extremely fringe ideas, even though this video makes it sound like they were some of the defining debates of 20th century Canadian politics. Too often I see fringe ideas being hugely exaggerated in the internet age because they make for wacky clickbait stories.
You notice that when these stories are told it s always said that some people were in favor of this or that. Some people can always be found supporting just about any random nonsense proposal you can imagine. There have been people who said Canada should join Europe, or buy Greenland, or create a one-world government, or just about any other goofy thing you can imagine. But we shouldn t treat the obscure fantasies of eccentrics as being major historical events deserving of such reverential retellings.

I m pretty sure India was a net loss by the time of independence, so why have you again made the boring old self-hating stereotype of the Bond villain Britons
If the British;
Colonise>Racist>Bad
Grant independence quickly >Did not prepare independent nation enough>Bad
Grant independence gradually>Trying to do the racism for longer>Bad
Don t intervene in international affairs >Racist isolationist anti-globalism>Bad
Intervene in international affairs>back to their old racist colonial ways>Bad
Discourage barbaric local practices such as widow burning quickly>Disrespecting local customs>Bad
Discourage barbaric local practices such as widow burning slowly>Didn t intervene quickly enough>Bad
And these arguments are always made by middle class English people

The main reason I hear that the idea of adding Turks and Caicos or any other island doesn't go anywhere now is that adding another province would be a constitutional issue, and any time you reopen discussion of constitutional issues Quebec has the opportunity to make a long list of demands that bogs everything down so nothing goes anywhere. So any big changes like that are off the table for a long long time. Not sure if that's true, but it's what people say.
The way around that would be adding it as a region of an existing province, but then the island would be diluted into some other province and that's not very appealing from the point of view of any island that used to be a whole country.

A colony of a colony is a colony, but if Canada had its own colony it would be a far less colonial nation that it is today, albeit but only a different type of douchebaggery. Also, as a Canadian, gotta say. I had no f'n clue about this history. Not gonna claim I possess any sense of how those Caribbean nations view the outcome but Im sure Canadians will do so regretting the lost opportunity to travel somewhere (and own property ergo displacing locals) warm within their country for the winter.

Yeah, we sorta had / still have a bit of resentment over the whole Brits: Use the Canadians as Meat Shie--- I mean Vanguards. yes. Vanguards. to soak up enemy bullets while our jolly British forces come in after to clean up during WWI and WWII. They saw Canadian forces as fully expendable, our troop casualties were catastrophic because British officers kept throwing our boys as decoys, bait and outright human shields for british troops (more so in WWI, but still a lot in WWII.

Yep, we got distracted by domestic issues and let it slide. As a major trading nation, with free trade agreements with some 45 countries, I see this as a series of missed opportunities. We could have jointly prospered and further diversified our economies jointly while also expanding our cultural base. The potential for further trade expansion into South America and Africa would have also been interesting. Ok, some nice vacation and retirement spots wouldn't have hurt either.

Canada has very close ties with most of the form British Caribbean Colonies, immigration, foreign aid, even military. For example Canada provided defence troops for most of the Caribbean during WW2 and Jamaicans and Bajans served in the Canadian military during WW2. Although for shear weight of population Florida would be a more likely territory for Canada.

A Hawaii of their own? I wouldn't call any of the Caribbean islands a Hawaii. You can go jogging at night in Hawaii. It some parts of Hawaii you can leave your doors unlocked. Yeah, it turns out that murdering all of the peaceful indigenous people and replacing them with the violent bloodthirsty savages that wiped out the San People is a bad idea

I'm from Belize (Previously British Honduras) and I'm so happy hearing the name of my country and a bit about it come out of History Matter's mouth, and damn I didn't know any stuff about the Canada thing tbh. Also I think that the guy holding the sign in 2: 14 is supposed to be George Price, aka Father of the Nation

I kind of feel bad for Turks and Caicos not joining Canada because it seems like something people in both countries want, but will just never happen until Quebec either leaves or starts being more cooperative. Considering they are French descended, I don't expect the latter anytime soon.
