It is interesting how Francis I (d. 1765) was officially the last non-Habsburg emperor, but his wife, Maria Theresa ran things. But the Habsburgs were HRE emperors going back to 1452 and Austrian rulers long before that. Tracing these dynastic lines is fun, but what violent messes they could be! The Schleswig-Holstein conflict is an example.

My favorite period on Holy Roman politics will always be that time where the empire was pretty much split by the Wittelsbachs, Luxembourgs, and Habsburgs. With each one aligning their own princes holding electorates (with the exclusion of the Hapsburgs) and just general dynastic funtimes.

honestly, isn't it biased to accuse the HRE of being weak. I always hear that, the empire was divided, too many opinions, too much back and forth. yet it lasted a thousand years. Clearly it's methods, it's constant gridlocks and debates wasn't such a bad system after all.

I wish there was an option to just filter out dumb comments like it didn't and it was neither holy, Roman nor an empire. The level of intelligence within the comment section would immediately rise significantly.

Huh, today I learned that the nice little town of Wetzlar that is near the town of Giessen where I went to college is actually significant for something other than having the region's only Ikea store.

I love your videos. The way they are edited, the fact that some are short and to the point (and some longer if you wish to learn more) and there is even some comedy in them!

Short said: It was all a big mess and didn't work at all. And even today Germany suffers from many powerful regional politicians, who do their own thing and fight each other.

Absolutely fascinating. Basically a decentralised mess with lots of individual states but producing a legal core by majority voting. Hmmm. sounds rather like the EU!

In portuguese, we call the Holy Roman Empire the Holy Roman GERMANIC Empire, since it doesn't make sense to call it roman, at least we put a GERMANIC on it's name

It's 100 % True that people used to communicate with signs. If you don't believe me, check out old silent movies. Oh, yeah, it was all in black and white too

I wish that my only job were to be bribed in order to go along with a forgone conclusion which really does not affect me or my powers very much anyway.

I love that he ended it by saying something about their long term stability being threatened and then the background for the sponsors is Napoleon

Shitty incompetent governments last the longest. because competent governments become tyrannical governments then get overthrown to become anarchy.

As they say: The Holy Roman Empire was not Holy, not Roman, and not much of an Empire. So a better name for it would be.

As a German, I have to admit: Only the Germans could invent such a monstrosity of bureaucracy and federalism.
